A 28-year-old electrician was brutally hacked to death by an eight-member gang in the Sonadanga area of Khulna city on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm behind the Talukdar Community Centre, where the victim was standing whilst using his mobile phone.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonadanga Model Police Station, Md Rafiqul Islam, the assailants arrived at the scene riding four motorcycles. Armed with sharp weapons, the gang launched a swift and deliberate attack, inflicting multiple deep stab wounds and slash injuries across the victim’s body. Local residents rushed the critically injured youth, identified as Mostakin, to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Attending doctors declared him dead on arrival. Mostakin, the son of Shahidul, resided near the Alkatra Mill in the Khulna Sadar area and worked at a local electrical shop.
The brazen nature of the assault in a public location triggered widespread panic amongst nearby residents. Detectives and local police officers have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the underlying motive and trace those responsible. Law enforcement authorities are reviewing circumstantial evidence, potential eyewitness accounts, and movement patterns of the motorcycles involved in the getaway, though no suspects have been formally named or arrested yet.
This latest killing has further intensified public anxieties over the safety situation across the metropolitan area. The structured execution of the attack—executed rapidly by an organized gang utilizing multiple vehicles—underscores growing concerns regarding violent criminal activity in the city.
Statistics maintained by the Crime Investigation Department of the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) reflect a troubling trend, with the city recording 24 homicides so far this year. Addressing public apprehension, KMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) M M Shakiluzzaman stated that rivalries surrounding the control of illegal drug networks and territorial dominance remain the primary catalysts behind most homicides in the city. Senior officers affirmed that law enforcement agencies are acting decisively to restore order, noting that suspects in the majority of previous cases have already been apprehended. Police operations also resulted in the recovery of eight firearms during targeted raids across the city over recent days, though the fresh killing presents a stern test to local security efforts.
