Bangladesh’s national teams are preparing for two overseas assignments, but neither the men’s nor the women’s side will have a member of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) selection panel travelling with them.
The Bangladesh men’s team are currently training in Mirpur as they prepare for their next international commitments. Their upcoming destination is the United Arab Emirates, where they are scheduled to face Afghanistan in a Test match before taking part in a tri-series involving Zimbabwe.
The women’s team, meanwhile, are currently in Japan for the Asian Games. Once their campaign at the competition is complete, they will return home before heading to Australia for an ODI series against the hosts.
Despite the significance of both tours, the BCB has decided not to send a selector with either squad. The move represents a departure from a practice that has been followed for years, under which at least one member of the selection panel would generally accompany the national team during bilateral series, both at home and overseas.
A selector travelling with the squad has traditionally provided an opportunity to observe players closely in an international environment. It also allows the selection panel to assess form, monitor emerging players and maintain direct communication with the team management during a series.
The BCB is now moving towards a different approach. According to board sources, selectors will no longer travel regularly with the national teams for every series. Instead, the board will assess the importance and requirements of individual tours before deciding whether a selector needs to be present.
The upcoming assignments in the UAE and Australia will therefore be among the first examples of this revised approach. The absence of selectors does not mean that the selection panel will have no involvement with the teams. Rather, the board intends to determine their presence on a tour-by-tour basis.
The timing comes as both Bangladesh teams face demanding schedules. The men’s side will have to manage the demands of a Test against Afghanistan before turning their attention to the tri-series with Zimbabwe. The women, meanwhile, are moving from the Asian Games to a series against Australia, leaving little room between the two assignments.
For selectors, regular overseas travel has been one way of assessing players beyond domestic competitions and monitoring how individuals respond to international conditions. Under the new arrangement, however, such direct observation on tour will be reserved for assignments that the BCB considers to require it.
The decision also reflects an attempt to make the selection panel’s travel more targeted rather than treating every international series in the same way. Future tours will consequently be assessed according to their importance and specific requirements.
For now, the focus for both Bangladesh teams remains firmly on preparation. The men are working towards their UAE commitments, while the women are competing in Japan before making the journey to Australia.
The upcoming tours will provide an early indication of how the BCB’s revised policy works in practice. What is clear is that the longstanding practice of having at least one selector accompany the national team on every bilateral assignment will no longer be followed as a routine.
