Barcelona are planning a special return for Lionel Messi at the renovated Camp Nou, with the club hoping to honour its legendary former No. 10 in front of a full stadium.
The proposal was confirmed by Barcelona president Joan Laporta during the club’s general assembly on Saturday. According to comments reported by Spanish sports outlet Sport, the club has already formally communicated the idea to Messi and is considering a special match or tribute once the redevelopment of Camp Nou has been fully completed.
The planned occasion would be centred on recognising Messi’s extraordinary contribution to Barcelona rather than marking a competitive return. The club wants supporters to have the opportunity to welcome the Argentine forward back to the stadium where he spent the majority of his professional career.
Laporta said Barcelona intends to stage the tribute with the stands filled, giving Messi a large-scale farewell in front of the supporters who watched him develop from a young academy player into one of the most celebrated footballers in the club’s history.
The renovated Spotify Camp Nou is expected to have a capacity of around 105,000 spectators when the redevelopment is complete. That would provide a significant setting for any event involving Messi, whose association with the stadium remains closely linked to some of the most memorable moments in Barcelona’s modern history.
Messi joined Barcelona’s youth system as a teenager after moving from Argentina and progressed through the club’s academy before establishing himself in the senior team. He went on to become the defining figure of an era in which Barcelona collected major domestic and European honours.
His departure in 2021, however, came in difficult circumstances. Barcelona’s financial and contractual situation meant the club could not continue with Messi under the terms required at the time. He subsequently left Spain and joined Paris Saint-Germain before later continuing his career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
Because his departure did not allow for a conventional farewell in front of a packed Camp Nou, Barcelona’s latest proposal carries particular significance. A return to the renovated stadium would give the club and its supporters an opportunity to formally acknowledge a player whose career at Barcelona spanned more than a decade.
The proposed tribute is not yet confirmed, however. While Barcelona has presented the idea to Messi, the final decision rests with the player himself. The club’s plans can only proceed if he agrees to take part.
For Barcelona, the timing would also carry symbolic importance. The return of a player so closely associated with Camp Nou, coinciding with the stadium’s new chapter after its redevelopment, would connect the club’s celebrated past with its future.
Whether Messi eventually walks back onto the Camp Nou pitch remains to be seen. For now, Barcelona have made their intention clear: when the renovated stadium is fully ready, they want their iconic No. 10 to return and receive the farewell they believe his contribution to the club deserves.
