Police in Borhanuddin upazila, Bhola, have recovered the body of a seven-year-old boy concealed inside a floating sack, two days after his sudden disappearance. The victim, identified as Ismail, was the son of local residents Akbar and Ruma. Law enforcement officers retrieved the child’s remains from a waterway in the municipality and have taken an 18-year-old youth into custody for questioning.
The body was discovered at approximately 11:15 am on Tuesday, floating in a canal adjacent to Muslim Para in Ward 5 of Borhanuddin municipality. Officers detained Rokon, aged 18, who resides in the same ward and is the son of local resident Nannu, to determine whether he played any role in the tragedy.
According to family members and local authorities, Ismail went missing on Sunday morning at around 10:30 am while playing near his home. Concerns grew rapidly when he failed to return, prompting his parents and neighbours to conduct exhaustive searches across the immediate vicinity and nearby properties. Despite contacting relatives and scouring the neighbourhood, the family found no trace of the child during the forty-eight hours following his disappearance.
The search ended grimly on Tuesday morning when local residents detected a strong foul odour emanating from a large sack floating in the canal. Suspecting foul play, residents alerted the authorities immediately. A team from Borhanuddin Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the sack from the water, and discovered the child’s body inside, where grieving family members subsequently identified the remains.
Police officers secured the scene and initiated preliminary investigative procedures. Ripon Kumar Saha, Inspector of Investigation at Borhanuddin Police Station, confirmed that the body is being transferred to the morgue at Bhola Sadar Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Inspector Saha emphasized that the exact cause and timing of death, alongside the circumstances surrounding how the body was placed into the canal, remain under active investigation. Officers are currently interviewing Rokon in custody, though no formal charges have been filed yet. Police confirmed that formal legal proceedings will move forward immediately once the victim’s family submits an official case filing. Local residents have urged authorities to expedite the inquiry to bring those responsible to justice.
