Parineeti Chopra Speaks Out Against Body-Shaming After Childbirth

Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra has criticised the tendency to mock women for changes in their bodies and weight after childbirth, arguing that such changes are a natural part of motherhood and should not be treated as a source of shame.

Speaking in a recent interview, Chopra questioned why physical changes following pregnancy, including weight gain and stretch marks, are often viewed negatively. She said that a woman who has carried a baby for nine months should not be made to feel embarrassed by the changes that pregnancy and childbirth may leave on her body.

According to the actress, changes in body shape after becoming a mother are a normal physical process. Weight can fluctuate and marks may appear on the skin, but neither should be used as a reason to judge a woman’s appearance. She described such changes as signs associated with the experience of motherhood rather than imperfections that need to be hidden.

Chopra also urged people to be more considerate when speaking to pregnant women and new mothers. Instead of commenting on their weight, figure or appearance, she said, conversations should focus on the wellbeing of the mother and her child.

Her remarks come amid wider discussions about the pressure women can face to meet particular standards of physical appearance, including after pregnancy. Social media has intensified that scrutiny, with photographs of public figures often prompting comments about weight, body shape and how quickly someone appears to have returned to their previous appearance.

The issue has also recently been raised on the Bigg Boss stage, where actor Salman Khan expressed his displeasure over comments directed at women about their physical appearance. Chopra has now spoken on the same broader concern, highlighting the need for greater sensitivity towards women during and after pregnancy.

The actress also discussed online trolling and explained that she spends relatively little time on social media. As a result, she does not allow comments from strangers to occupy much of her attention. Rather than focusing on what people may be writing about her online, she said she prefers to give priority to her family, her personal life and the people close to her.

Chopra’s comments draw attention to the distinction between a woman’s health and the appearance-based expectations often placed on her. Pregnancy and childbirth involve major physical changes, and recovery does not necessarily happen in the same way or at the same pace for every woman.

For pregnant women and new mothers, unsolicited remarks about weight or appearance can therefore be particularly unwelcome. Chopra’s message is that social conversations around motherhood should move away from judging how a woman looks and towards showing consideration for her and her child.

Her remarks have added to an ongoing public conversation about body image, social-media scrutiny and the expectations placed on women after childbirth. For Chopra, the physical changes associated with motherhood should not be regarded as flaws, but as a natural part of a significant stage in a woman’s life.
