India delivered a masterclass in one-day cricket at Thiruvananthapuram’s Greenfield International Stadium, cruising to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the West Indies. Chasing a target of 297 runs, the host nation made light work of the task, reaching the destination in just 41.4 overs with eight wickets in hand. Whilst the victory itself was clinical, the match will be remembered for yet another record-breaking display by Virat Kohli.
Facing a rising delivery from West Indian paceman Alzarri Joseph, Kohli calmly pulled the ball towards mid-wicket for a boundary. That single shot carried him into one of the most exclusive realms in world cricket: he became only the second batsman in the history of One Day Internationals to reach the 15,000-run milestone, following in the footsteps of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli’s achievement is all the more remarkable for the blistering speed at which he reached it. Whilst Tendulkar required 377 innings to hit 15,000 runs, Kohli accomplished the feat in a mere 303 innings. From 8,000 runs all the way through to 15,000, Kohli holds the distinction of being the fastest player to reach every thousands-milestone in the 50-over format.
He was far from finished. The former captain went on to register his 55th ODI century, constructing a devastating, unbeaten 139 off just 88 deliveries. His innings was laced with ten boundaries and nine towering sixes, completely dismantling the opposition’s bowling attack.
Shubman Gill provided brilliant support at the other end, scoring his 10th ODI century. Gill’s sparkling 110 off 108 balls contained 13 fours and a six. He established an opening stand of 74 runs with skipper Rohit Sharma (32) before combining with Kohli for a commanding 151-run partnership for the second wicket, effectively taking the match away from the Caribbean side.
The match eclipsed an earlier achievement in the first innings, where West Indies’ Justin Greaves compiled his maiden ODI century with a hard-fought 101. Despite his valiant effort, Greaves’ moment in the sun was firmly overshadowed by Kohli’s brilliance.
This performance further consolidates Kohli’s position behind Tendulkar in the all-time international run-scoring charts, comfortably ahead of icons such as Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, and Sanath Jayasuriya. With 55 ODI centuries—six clear of Tendulkar’s 49—Kohli continues to cement his status as the premier one-day batsman of his generation.
