Former Youth Leader Arrested Following Gunfire and Rioting in Banglamotor

Severe public unrest erupted in the capital’s Banglamotor neighbourhood after a former political youth leader allegedly pistol-whipped a local resident and discharged live ammunition into the air, triggering a tense standoff and clashes between angry residents and law enforcement officers.
The key suspect, Ferdous Ahamed Saymon, former convenor of the Hatirjheel Thana Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—was taken into police custody following the incident. According to eye-witnesses, his two brothers, Omar Ahamed and Mizan Ahamed, were also present alongside him during the altercation.
The violence commenced following a heated argument between Saymon and a local resident identified as Mehidi Hasan Sohan. As the confrontation escalated, Saymon reportedly drew a handgun and struck Sohan on the head, inflicting physical injuries.
Outraged by the unprovoked assault, nearby residents gathered to confront the attacker. In an effort to disperse the growing crowd, Saymon allegedly fired five blank rounds from his firearm into the air. The gunshots caused widespread panic throughout the commercial district, but the crowd refused to back down. Under heavy pursuit from local residents, Saymon and his brothers fled the street and barricaded themselves inside a nearby residential property for protection.
A large crowd quickly surrounded the residence, sealing off all exit points. Demonstrators set fire to a motorcycle belonging to Saymon that had been left parked on the street.
Multiple police units rushed to the scene to restore order and defuse the volatile atmosphere. However, as officers positioned themselves outside the building, confrontation broke out between law enforcement personnel and the surrounding crowd. Local residents accused the arriving police personnel of attempting to secure safe passage for the suspect rather than arresting him. Police authorities have not issued a formal statement addressing these claims.
With the crowd swelling and tensions mounting, additional police reinforcements were deployed to reinforce the perimeter. Officers eventually entered the residence, took Saymon into custody, and escorted him to the police station.
Local residents expressed deep-seated anger regarding Saymon’s past conduct, accusing him of orchestrating widespread extortion rackets, illegal drug distribution, and property grabbing in Banglamotor for an extended period. According to local accounts, these illicit activities intensified significantly following the political transitions of 5 August, with low-income families and small business owners bearing the brunt of systemic harassment.
Community members noted that although the BNP formally expelled Saymon from its ranks several months ago, he continued to exert considerable influence in the area, allegedly backed by high-ranking political patrons. Neither Saymon nor members of his family could be reached for comment regarding the allegations.
A heavy police presence remains in Banglamotor as local authorities initiate formal legal proceedings involving illegal firearm usage, assault, rioting, and public disturbance charges.
