Kavan Sullivan Sets MLS Record at Just 17

Kavan Sullivan has entered Major League Soccer history after becoming the youngest player ever to win the league’s Player of the Month award. The Philadelphia Union midfielder was named MLS Player of the Month for September on Wednesday, receiving the honour at just 17 years and two days old.

The achievement adds another landmark to the rapid rise of the United States international, who is of Bangladeshi heritage. Sullivan’s record-breaking award came after a remarkable month in which he played a decisive role in Philadelphia Union’s perfect run.

The Union won all five of their matches in September, with Sullivan contributing four goals and five assists. His nine direct goal contributions were the most recorded by any MLS player during the month.

His five assists also placed him joint-top in the league’s assist standings for September. His four goals put him joint-third among the month’s leading scorers, underlining the teenager’s influence both as a creator and a finisher.

Sullivan’s latest achievement means he has taken the record for the youngest MLS Player of the Month from Daryl Dike. The former Orlando City player had previously held the mark after winning the award in August 2020 at the age of 20 years and 98 days.

The teenager’s form has extended well beyond September. Sullivan has either scored or provided an assist in eight consecutive matches, giving him the longest goal-contribution streak recorded by a teenage player in MLS.

Across the current season, Sullivan has featured in 24 matches and started 17 of them. He has played 1,450 minutes, scoring seven goals and registering 12 assists. His 19 goal contributions place him second among teenagers for a single MLS season.

The record in that category belongs to Alphonso Davies, who produced 20 goal contributions in 2018. Sullivan therefore remains within one contribution of matching the mark, despite still being in the early stages of his professional career.

His record-breaking run began at an exceptionally young age. Sullivan made his MLS debut for Philadelphia Union against New England Revolution on 17 July 2024, when he was only 14 years and 293 days old. That appearance made him the youngest player to debut in the history of North American team sports.

Sullivan has also followed a distinctive development pathway within Philadelphia Union’s system. He progressed through MLS NEXT and MLS NEXT Pro before making the step up to the senior side. By becoming an MLS Player of the Month after coming through those stages, he has established another first in the league’s history.

His progress has also been recognised at international level. Sullivan made his senior debut for the United States last month at the age of 16 years and 363 days. He consequently became the fourth-youngest player to make a senior appearance for the United States.

For Philadelphia Union, Sullivan’s development has coincided with a period in which his attacking contribution has become increasingly prominent. His September figures were particularly striking: five matches, four goals, five assists and nine direct goal contributions.

At 17, Sullivan has already collected several age-related records at both club and international level. His latest Player of the Month award represents another significant step in a career that has progressed from the Philadelphia academy to the senior MLS side and, more recently, the United States national team.
