Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 464 people during routine operations across the capital over a 24-hour period. During the operations, police filed 42 cases involving various offences and seized 10,872 yaba tablets, five kilogrammes of cannabis and three grammes of heroin, along with other evidence.
The information was disclosed on Monday (12 October) by Md Aktar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division.
According to the DMP, the operations were conducted in different police station areas across Dhaka as part of ongoing efforts to control crime and maintain law and order. Police arrested individuals suspected of involvement in various offences and recovered narcotics and other items during the raids.
However, the authorities did not provide a detailed breakdown of the alleged offences involving those arrested.
Mirpur recorded the highest number of arrests among the DMP’s divisions, with 114 people detained over the 24-hour period. Tejgaon ranked second, with 81 arrests.
In other divisions, police arrested 58 people in Lalbagh, 57 in Wari, 46 in Motijheel and 45 in Uttara. A further 32 people were arrested in Ramna, while Gulshan recorded 30 arrests. The Detective Branch (DB) of police separately arrested one person.
The eight police divisions accounted for 463 arrests, while the DB accounted for the remaining arrest, bringing the total to 464.
Drug seizures were among the key outcomes of the operations. Police recovered 10,872 yaba tablets, five kilogrammes of cannabis and three grammes of heroin. The DMP did not disclose the specific locations where the drugs were found or state how many arrests were directly linked to the narcotics seizures.
In addition to the drugs, officers recovered two mobile phones and Tk 3,520 in cash. The authorities did not provide further details about the circumstances in which the phones and money were seized or whether they were linked to specific cases.
The DMP regularly conducts operations across the capital to prevent crime, tackle drug-related offences and bring suspects within the reach of the law. Such operations may involve searches, arrests and the collection of evidence for further investigation.
The police said legal proceedings against those arrested were under way. However, no further information was provided about the progress of the 42 cases or the specific allegations against the individuals detained.
An arrest does not establish guilt. The allegations against those arrested must be examined through the legal process, and any determination of guilt must be made by a competent court.
The latest operation forms part of the DMP’s continuing efforts to maintain public safety and enforce the law across Dhaka. Further details about the cases, the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the progress of the investigations would provide a clearer picture of the operation’s overall outcome.
