BSF Accused of Assaulting Farmers Inside Bangladesh

Members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) have been accused of entering Bangladeshi territory near the Burimari border in Lalmonirhat and assaulting local farmers. According to local accounts, the BSF personnel withdrew after farmers and other residents confronted and chased them, throwing sound grenades towards the Bangladeshis as they left the area.

The incident took place on Saturday evening, 24 October, near sub-pillar 4 of main border pillar 837 in the Bamondol border area of Burimari Union, Patgram Upazila, Lalmonirhat.

According to sources in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents, farmers were working on the Bangladeshi side of the border when several BSF personnel crossed a nearby river and entered the area. The personnel reportedly instructed the farmers to leave. An argument followed, during which the BSF members allegedly struck the farmers with sticks.

The confrontation escalated when local farmers and residents objected to the alleged assault. Some farmers reportedly took sticks and chased the BSF personnel. Local sources said the Indian border guards threw sound grenades towards the Bangladeshis while retreating from the scene.

The precise circumstances surrounding the alleged crossing remain unclear. No detailed account has been provided of why the BSF personnel entered the area or what prompted them to order the farmers to leave. It was also not immediately clear whether any farmers had sustained injuries or whether the sound grenades caused any damage.

The incident has caused tension and anxiety in the Bamondol border area. In response, the BGB has strengthened patrols and surveillance along the border to help maintain security and prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Shahinul Islam, commander of Rangpur 61 BGB, said a message had been sent to the BSF requesting a flag meeting in protest against the incident. Such meetings provide an established channel for border forces to raise concerns, exchange information and discuss incidents that could affect security and relations in border communities.

The proposed meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the two sides to discuss the allegations and clarify the circumstances of the confrontation. However, no date or time for the meeting was specified in the information available, and no response from the BSF was reported.

Border communities in areas such as Patgram depend on access to nearby farmland for their livelihoods. Incidents involving people working close to the international boundary can therefore create immediate concerns over personal safety, access to agricultural land and the risk of further confrontation. Maintaining clear communication between the two countries’ border forces is important in preventing local disputes from escalating.

For now, the account of the incident rests on information provided by local sources and the BGB. The allegations against the BSF have not been independently verified, and a response from the Indian border force was not included in the available information.

The BGB’s request for a flag meeting marks the next reported step in addressing the incident through official channels. Further details about the circumstances of the alleged assault, the condition of the farmers and any subsequent discussions between the border forces remain unavailable.
