Mohammad Firoz, 45, died on Saturday afternoon, 24 October, while receiving life-support treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. The alleged attack took place on Friday afternoon at Doktor Bari, in the Member Dokan area of Ward 8 of Kalma Union.
Firoz was the son of Kashem Ali, a resident of the same household. He served as joint general secretary of the northern unit of the Jubo Dal in Kalma Union, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to local accounts, the dispute began after Firoz planted bean seeds on his own land beside the home of a man identified as Kajol on Thursday. He also constructed a bamboo trellis to support the growing plants.
The following day, after Friday prayers, Kajol’s wife, Jannat, allegedly cut down the structure. When Firoz returned from prayers and discovered what had happened, he confronted her, leading to an argument.
The situation reportedly escalated when Kajol arrived at the scene. He is accused of attacking Firoz repeatedly with a machete, leaving him seriously injured. The precise sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault will need to be established through the police investigation.
Firoz was initially taken to Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex for medical attention. As his condition required more advanced treatment, he was subsequently transferred to Bhola Sadar Hospital. His condition later deteriorated, prompting his family to take him to Dhaka for further treatment.
He was admitted to Supermax Health Care Limited, a private hospital in the capital, where he remained on life support. Despite the treatment, he died on Saturday afternoon.
The incident has drawn attention to a dispute that reportedly began over a small-scale gardening arrangement on private land. While disagreements over property boundaries, plants and shared residential spaces can lead to tensions, the allegation that the disagreement escalated into a fatal assault makes a thorough investigation essential. The available information does not establish whether there had been any earlier disputes between the people involved.
Speaking about the case, Sub-Inspector Md Nurul Amin of Lalmohan Police Station said officers had visited the scene after receiving a complaint. He also confirmed that Kajol, the alleged attacker, had been detained.
Police are preparing to file a case in connection with the incident. Further legal action will depend on the investigation and the evidence gathered by the authorities.
The allegations against Kajol have not yet been established in court. Investigators will need to examine the circumstances of the confrontation and gather relevant statements and evidence to determine responsibility for Firoz’s death.
