Ronaldinho Set for Shock Return to Competitive Football at 46

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho is reportedly preparing to return to competitive football at the age of 46, with Italian club Ravenna expected to feature him in a match against local rivals Forlì on 15 November. The announcement, attributed to a statement from the club on Friday, has sparked interest among supporters eager to see the former Barcelona and AC Milan star back on the pitch.

Renowned for his dazzling footwork, inventive passing and extraordinary dribbling, Ronaldinho was one of the most entertaining players of his generation. His ability to beat defenders with apparent ease, combined with his trademark smile, made him a global football icon. His return would offer supporters a rare opportunity to see the Brazilian in a competitive setting more than a decade after his last professional appearance.

Ronaldinho was a key member of Brazil’s squad that won the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Three years later, he received the Ballon d’Or, recognising him as the world’s outstanding player. During his spell at Barcelona, he became central to the club’s revival and helped establish a period of success that captured the imagination of supporters across the world. He later played for AC Milan, adding another major European club to an illustrious career.

His last competitive appearance came in 2015, when he played for Brazilian side Fluminense. In 2018, he formally announced his retirement from professional football. Although he stepped away from the game, he remained closely associated with football through public appearances and other activities.

A new role at Ravenna

Ronaldinho’s connection with Ravenna extends beyond a possible return as a player. In June this year, he signed an agreement with the Italian club and was subsequently reported to have bought a stake in the organisation, becoming a co-owner. The club is owned by his friend Ignazio Cipriani.

Cipriani has indicated that bringing a globally recognised figure such as Ronaldinho into the club was intended to strengthen its relationship with the city and attract greater public interest. For a club competing outside Italy’s top divisions, the involvement of a former World Cup winner and Ballon d’Or recipient could offer a significant boost in visibility.

The arrangement also gives Ronaldinho a role in the club beyond his presence on the pitch. His name and international reputation could help draw supporters, raise the club’s profile and increase attention around its matches. Whether that interest translates into sustained support will depend on how the partnership develops.

When Ronaldinho arrived in Italy in August, he was initially cautious about confirming whether he would play. At the time, he said he had come to help the team, leaving open the possibility of appearing in a match. The prospect of scoring the 300th goal of his professional career had also been raised, adding another potential milestone to the story of his return.

Forlì derby attracts added attention

The proposed appearance is scheduled for Ravenna’s home ground, Stadio Bruno Benelli, against Forlì in a fixture described as a traditional derby. Local rivalries often carry significance beyond league positions, and Ronaldinho’s involvement would give the match an additional attraction for supporters.

According to the figures supplied in the report, Ravenna had collected 20 points from 10 matches and occupied second place in the league table, eight points behind leaders Spezia. The team’s position means that results remain important as it seeks to strengthen its standing in the competition.

However, the extent of Ronaldinho’s involvement remains a key question. A player who retired from professional football in 2018 would face different physical demands from those encountered during his peak years. Match fitness, the pace of competitive football and the amount of playing time he could manage would all influence his contribution.

His technical ability and experience remain central to his reputation, but a return at this age would be judged differently from his performances during his prime. Supporters may hope for flashes of the close control and creative flair that made him famous, although expectations would need to take account of the lengthy break from professional competition.

If the reported appearance goes ahead, it is likely to attract attention well beyond Ravenna and Forlì. For many fans, the appeal lies not simply in the prospect of goals or a particular result, but in seeing one of football’s most distinctive entertainers return to the setting where he made his name.

As anticipation builds around 15 November, the central question is whether Ronaldinho will take to the pitch as planned and, if he does, how much of his familiar magic he can reproduce in a competitive match.
