A robbery occurred in the early hours of Friday, 21 November, at a house in Hajishwarai village, Mirsharai, Chattogram, where guests attending a wedding ceremony were allegedly looted of gold ornaments and cash. The incident took place at the residence of expatriate Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, located in Ward No. 1 of Durgapur Union.
According to local sources, the wedding celebrations for Abdul Mannan’s daughter commenced on Friday afternoon. The bride was taken to the groom’s house around 7:00 pm, after which most guests departed. A small number of guests stayed overnight, providing an opportunity for the robbers to strike.
Reports indicate that a group of unidentified assailants broke the main door lock of the two-storey residence and entered the house. They allegedly tied up family members and remaining guests, before stealing gold ornaments and cash.
Local resident and Union Parishad member Md Nurul Anwar, whose sister-in-law Rosina Akter was present, stated that the gang made off with at least 15 bhori of gold jewellery and approximately Tk 100,000 in cash. The family has reportedly been left traumatised by the incident, and members were unable to attend the bou bhat ceremony, a customary post-wedding event, scheduled for Saturday.
Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim of Jorarganj Police Station confirmed that police patrols and village guards were in the vicinity at the time of the robbery. Responding swiftly to the incident, officers arrived at the scene; however, the suspects escaped through adjacent paddy fields. Investigations suggest that the perpetrators may belong to a highway-based robbery gang, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend them.
