Residents of Baipail in Gazipur, Dhaka, experienced another minor earthquake on Saturday morning, just 24 hours after a stronger tremor shook the region. The Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center of the Department of Meteorology recorded the quake at 10:36 am.
Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Professional Assistant at the centre, confirmed that the earthquake measured 3.3 on the Richter scale and originated in Baipail. The tremor was relatively mild, and no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.
This minor earthquake comes in the wake of a far more devastating event the previous day. On Friday morning, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck 13 kilometres east of Dhaka, claiming the lives of ten people, including two children. The fatalities were reported as follows: four in Dhaka, five in Narsingdi, and one in Narayanganj. In addition, several hundred people sustained injuries across different districts.
The consecutive tremors have heightened concerns about seismic activity in Bangladesh, which lies near tectonically active regions in South Asia. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly in older buildings and densely populated areas, and to follow standard earthquake safety precautions.
The following table summarises the recent seismic events in Dhaka and surrounding areas:
| Date | Location | Magnitude | Depth (km) | Casualties | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 Nov 2025 | 13 km east of Dhaka | 5.7 | Not reported | 10 deaths, several hundred injured | Strong tremor; widespread impact |
| 22 Nov 2025 | Baipail, Gazipur, Dhaka | 3.3 | Not reported | None reported | Minor tremor; no immediate damage |
Seismologists emphasise that even minor tremors can serve as reminders of the potential for larger earthquakes in the region. Emergency services and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department continue to monitor the situation closely and advise residents to remain alert for aftershocks.
Local authorities have also urged communities to report any structural damage promptly, as the risk of aftershocks and related incidents remains significant following a major earthquake.
The recent sequence of earthquakes underscores the importance of public awareness, preparedness, and rapid response in mitigating the effects of seismic events in Bangladesh.
