Abhishek Sharma Sets Six-Hitting Record in Historic India Victory

India’s explosive opening batter Abhishek Sharma has added another remarkable achievement to his growing list of records, becoming the first player to hit seven sixes off the opening ball of an innings in men’s Twenty20 international cricket.

The left-handed batter reached the milestone during the opening match of India’s T20I series against New Zealand in Christchurch, where the visitors successfully chased a challenging target of 226 runs to secure a thrilling six-wicket victory.

Abhishek wasted no time making his intentions clear. Facing New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry, he dispatched the very first delivery over the cover region for six, immediately putting the hosts under pressure and establishing a new world record.

The powerful stroke took Abhishek’s tally of first-ball sixes in international T20 cricket to seven, surpassing Afghanistan’s Shafiqullah Shinwari, who previously held the record with six. India’s Suryakumar Yadav occupies the next position on the list, having struck five sixes off the opening delivery of an innings.

The achievement underlines Abhishek’s aggressive approach at the top of the batting order. Rather than spending time assessing the conditions, the Indian opener has developed a reputation for attacking bowlers from the outset, often looking to exploit the fielding restrictions during the powerplay.

His latest record reflects both his confidence and his ability to execute attacking strokes against international bowling attacks.

Despite his historic start, Abhishek could not convert his promising innings into a substantial individual score. He struck 29 runs from just 12 deliveries, including two boundaries and three sixes, before being dismissed after offering a catch off Michael Bracewell’s bowling.

His brief but entertaining innings provided India with early momentum in their pursuit of New Zealand’s imposing total.

The hosts had set India a formidable challenge, requiring the visitors to maintain a demanding scoring rate throughout their innings. Although Abhishek’s departure briefly interrupted their progress, India’s middle order responded with an impressive display of controlled aggression.

Sanju Samson played a crucial role in the successful chase, contributing a valuable 67 runs. His innings helped stabilise India’s pursuit while ensuring the required scoring rate remained manageable.

Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir also made significant contributions, scoring 42 runs apiece. Their performances proved decisive as India continued to close in on the target despite the pressure of chasing a substantial total.

With the contest approaching its final stages, the Indian batters maintained their composure and completed the chase with two deliveries remaining, sealing a six-wicket triumph.

The result carried considerable significance beyond the series opener. By successfully chasing 226, India established a new national record for their highest successful run chase in men’s T20 internationals.

Such pursuits demand sustained attacking intent, particularly when the opposition has posted a total exceeding 220. Teams chasing targets of this magnitude must balance aggressive stroke play with the need to preserve wickets, leaving little room for prolonged periods of cautious batting.

India’s performance demonstrated the depth of their batting line-up, with contributions from several players ensuring that Abhishek’s early dismissal did not derail the chase.

For Abhishek, the match represented another personal milestone in his international career. His ability to attack the opening delivery has become a distinctive feature of his batting, and the latest achievement places him ahead of some of the format’s most aggressive players.

The Christchurch encounter ultimately produced two notable records: Abhishek’s unprecedented seventh first-ball six in T20 internationals and India’s highest successful run chase in the format.

While Samson, Iyer and Dhir played central roles in securing the victory, Abhishek’s opening stroke provided one of the defining moments of a memorable contest, reinforcing his reputation as one of India’s most fearless attacking batters.
