The resulting point distribution saw Nepal finish top of the standings and advance alongside Afghanistan, ending Japan’s tournament run in the group stage. Nepal will meet Sri Lanka in the next round, while Afghanistan face a formidable test against India.
The continent’s four highest-ranked sides—India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan—were granted automatic entry into the quarter-finals based on their ICC T20 International rankings, bypassing the group stage entirely. The tournament structure provides lower-ranked associate nations with crucial exposure against established Test-playing countries, expanding cricket’s footprint across the region.
The quarter-final stage commences on Monday, with Pakistan playing Hong Kong in the morning fixture at 06:00 Bangladesh Standard Time (BST), followed by India taking on Afghanistan at 11:00 BST. On Tuesday, Sri Lanka face Nepal in the early match at 06:00 BST, before Bangladesh make their tournament debut against Malaysia at 11:00 BST.
Head-to-head encounters between Bangladesh and Malaysia remain scarce in international cricket. Their sole previous international meeting took place during the quarter-finals of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. On that occasion, Bangladesh narrowly edged out Malaysia by just two runs in a tense finish to secure a place in the semi-finals. Having progressed directly to the last eight this year, Bangladesh must now rely on that past knockout experience to navigate past a resolute Malaysian side.
