Bangladesh batting coach Mohammad Ashraful urges patience after Harare collapse

The Bangladesh national cricket team’s ongoing batting vulnerabilities have intensified in Zimbabwe, following a disjointed performance in the opening One Day International (ODI). Failing to chase down a modest target of 142 runs, the tourists suffered a heavy defeat at the Harare Sports Club, compounding the frustration of their loss in the preceding solitary Test match.

The squad will return to the same venue tomorrow for a critical second ODI. With the series on the line, Bangladesh face a must-win situation to keep the three-match campaign alive. Despite mounting external pressure, national batting coach Mohammad Ashraful remains optimistic that his top order will rectify their technical missteps in this high-stakes encounter.

In a video briefing sent from Harare, Ashraful analysed the team’s current predicament while expressing firm confidence in a swift turnaround. “I hope the players address their errors and mount a strong comeback in the final two matches,” Ashraful stated. “The current level of performance is certainly below our internal expectations. However, I am confident that our batsmen will replicate the excellent form they displayed over the preceding six months across the remaining ODIs and the subsequent three-match Twenty20 series.”

Adjusting to steep bounce and spacious outfields

Reflecting on the opening defeat, the former national captain suggested that several top-order batsmen fell victim to genuine misfortune rather than fundamentally poor shot selection. He noted that key dismissals occurred when well-timed shots travelled directly into the hands of positioned Zimbabwean fielders.

Ashraful highlighted the stark structural and environmental contrasts between domestic venues in Dhaka or Sylhet and the Harare Sports Club. In Bangladesh, boundary dimensions typically measure between 60 and 65 metres. Conversely, the playing surface in Harare demands clearing distances of 73 to 75 metres. This spatial discrepancy, combined with a harder deck, has visibly disrupted the tourists’ natural timing.

“We were somewhat unfortunate on the day,” Ashraful explained. “Both Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar executed shots that flew straight to fielders. In Tamim’s case, the unexpected bounce caused the ball to deviate slightly from his intended trajectory. While our domestic pitches back home have improved over the last seven months, the steep bounce here presents an entirely different challenge. Navigating a disciplined Zimbabwean pace attack that utilises its height to maintain an immaculate line and length is far from straightforward.”

Winter climate compounds technical challenges

The sudden transition from the subcontinent to Southern Africa has also exposed the squad to severe climatic adjustments, complicating their acclimatisation process. The players recently departed from the intense summer heat of Bangladesh only to land in the midst of a chilly Zimbabwean winter.

According to the coaching staff, while the squad has engaged in rigorous, high-quality training sessions, this preparation has yet to manifest in competitive match situations. The combination of early-morning moisture, extra lateral movement, and a cooler atmosphere has handed the local bowlers a distinct home advantage. Nevertheless, Ashraful maintains that the initial acclimatisation shock has subsided, and he expects the side’s veteran experience to deliver a levelled series tomorrow.
