Trailblazing K-pop quartet KARD to disband after a decade

The global K-pop community has been left reeling following the announcement that the pioneering co-ed group KARD are to dissolve. Their management agency, DSP Media, issued an official statement confirming that the four-piece ensemble will formally disband at the end of the year, marking the conclusion of a highly unusual and remarkably successful decade-long run.

In an industry where entertainment agencies strictly adhere to gender-segregated formulas—traditionally launching all-male boybands or all-female girlbands—KARD were a magnificent anomaly. Debuting in 2016, the lineup consisting of J.Seph, BM, Somin, and Jiwoo boldly rewrote the standard K-pop blueprint. Their rare mixed-gender dynamic and distinctive dancehall-infused rhythms struck an immediate chord with international listeners, cultivating an exceptionally fierce following across Europe and Latin America.

Throughout their ten years at the forefront of the genre, the group delivered a string of global streaming hits, including early anthems ‘Oh Na Na’ and ‘Don’t Recall’, alongside later favourites like ‘Hola Hola’, ‘Ride on the Wind’, ‘Red Moon’, ‘Ring the Alarm’, and ‘Tell My Mama’. Although they built their formidable reputation on a foundation of critically acclaimed mini-albums, the group is now preparing one final gift for their dedicated fanbase, known globally as Hidden KARD.

A final album and a global farewell tour

The quartet is scheduled to release their first-ever full-length studio album, Where To Now? (Part 2): Nowhere, on 28th July. This milestone record will double as their swan song. Following the release, KARD will honour their final commitments by embarking on the ‘Now Here World Tour’ throughout August and September. Once the final stage lights are lowered on this international concert series, the group will officially bring their collective operations to an end.

KARD's Farewell Timeline:
• 28th July – Release of final studio album 'Where To Now? (Part 2): Nowhere'.
• August to September – Execution of the 'Now Here World Tour'.
• Late 2026 – Official termination of group activities and contract expiration.

In the highly volatile South Korean music scene, newly launched groups typically sign standard seven-year exclusive contracts. A staggering percentage of acts fail to navigate this milestone, an industry phenomenon often dubbed “the seven-year itch”. KARD successfully defied these grim statistics, with their mutual camaraderie and reliable international commercial viability pushing them into a tenth year. However, with their extended contracts reaching a natural conclusion, both the members and DSP Media agreed that the timing was ideal to close this chapter.

While the band itself is separating, all four members plan to remain visible figures within the broader entertainment landscape. Each performer is expected to pivot toward solo ventures, with individual schedules already being drawn up for solo music releases, high-fashion modelling contracts, and acting roles in domestic television dramas.

In a poignant message directed to the group’s global audience, DSP Media expressed immense gratitude for the past ten years of unwavering loyalty.

“Following extensive and heartfelt discussions with the four members, we have mutually agreed that KARD will conclude their remarkable journey with the upcoming album and world tour,” the agency noted. “We are eternally grateful to the fans who have walked alongside KARD. We sincerely hope you will continue to offer your warmth and encouragement to the members as they embark upon their respective solo careers.”
