Bangladesh Gold Prices Tumble Following Latest Market Regulation

The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) has implemented a substantial reduction in the price of gold across the domestic market, offering tangible relief to consumer groups. The tariff for high-grade 22-carat gold has been lowered by 2,216 Taka per bhori. Following this industry intervention, a single bhori of 22-carat gold, inclusive of statutory Value Added Tax (VAT), will retail at 221,966 Taka.

The apex administrative body of the nation’s jewellery sector disclosed the revised pricing framework via an official media advisory on Monday morning, 13 July 2026. According to the executive directive, the newly integrated rates became legally binding across all retail showrooms starting from 10:00 am on the same day.

BAJUS noted that the downward recalibration was prompted by a noticeable contraction in the price of pure gold, commercially designated as tejabi gold, within the domestic bullion market. The trade organisation adjusted consumer tariffs to mirror these localized trade realities accurately.

Adjusted Pricing Tiers Across Carat Classifications

The newly deployed pricing matrix alters the transactional cost of all standard purities of the precious metal. A standard bhori, equivalent to exactly 11.664 grams, will now command distinct values based on its verified purity rating.

Under this updated schedule, 21-carat gold is fixed at 211,993 Taka per bhori, whilst 18-carat gold has been recalibrated to 182,075 Taka. Traditional or unrefined gold, traded under the heritage Sanatan method, has declined to 148,774 Taka per bhori.

Trade officials clarified that these institutional baselines remain mandatory for all operating retail establishments until the association deems it necessary to issue a subsequent market directive. However, ancillary manufacturing fees will continue to vary depending on the complexity of the ornament designs. BAJUS has explicitly instructed merchants that because VAT is fully integrated into the consumer retail price, no merchant is authorised to levy independent tax additions at the point of sale. Existing guidelines regarding exchange policies and direct buybacks—which exclude design costs, stone values, and specific administrative levies—remain completely unchanged.

This market correction directly follows a price hike executed three days prior. On the morning of 10 July, BAJUS had inflated prices by an identical margin of 2,216 Taka, pushing the market rate of 22-carat gold to an historic peak of 224,182 Taka. During that brief phase, 21-carat was positioned at 214,093 Taka, 18-carat at 183,883 Taka, and Sanatan gold at 150,232 Taka.

Cyclical Volatility Patterns Persist

The frequent revisions highlight the acute price volatility that has characterised the domestic bullion sector throughout recent years. Monday’s announcement represents the 90th formal price adjustment executed by BAJUS within the current calendar year of 2026 alone. Across these ninety iterations, gold prices were raised on 44 occasions, reduced 45 times, and subjected to a singular technical VAT adjustment.

This hyper-reactive pricing model closely mirrors the market patterns recorded during the preceding annual cycle. In 2025, the domestic sector witnessed a total of 93 distinct price interventions, driven primarily by fluctuating international spot prices and regional supply chain pressures. The 2025 cycle was distinctly bullish, featuring 64 upward hikes and merely 29 downward reductions.

Parallel Downward Adjustments Extended to Silver

In tandem with the gold market realignment, BAJUS introduced a parallel markdown in the price of silver, mitigating cost pressures across the broader white metal trade. The cost of 22-carat silver has decreased by 117 Taka per bhori, bringing its new retail value down to 4,607 Taka.

Concurrently, 21-carat silver has been re-anchored at 4,374 Taka per bhori, whilst 18-carat has moved to 3,791 Taka. Traditional Sanatan silver rounds out the lower end of the spectrum at 2,885 Taka per bhori.

The silver trade has displayed similar tendencies towards systemic volatility. This mid-July intervention marks the 56th modification of silver pricing within the current year, evenly divided between 28 price increases and 28 price drops. This pattern stands out as a departure from the conservative trading behaviour observed in 2025, during which silver was adjusted only 13 times, experiencing ten increases and just three reductions. Senior merchants believe these rapid, proactive re-evaluations remain essential to safeguard domestic businesses from structural losses whilst keeping consumer engagement viable.
