Five more people have died from illnesses associated with measles symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths linked to measles and measles-like symptoms to 890 since 15 March.
The latest figures were released on Thursday in the Directorate General of Health Services’ daily measles situation report. The report also shows that the outbreak continues to place substantial pressure on the country’s healthcare system, with more than 1,000 new patients coming under medical attention in a single day.
According to the health authorities, 1,025 new patients were identified or brought under treatment during the latest 24-hour period. Of them, 74 were confirmed to have measles, while 951 were suffering from symptoms consistent with measles. The figures indicate that the number of people presenting with suspected or measles-like illness remains considerably higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed cases.
Since 15 March, the cumulative number of suspected measles patients has reached 140,076. During the same period, 17,543 people have been confirmed as having measles. The wide gap between suspected and confirmed cases reflects the large number of people who have developed symptoms requiring assessment and medical attention, even though not all have subsequently been confirmed as measles cases.
The mortality figures also underline the severity of the situation. Of the 890 deaths recorded since the beginning of the reporting period, 791 occurred among patients who had measles-like symptoms, while 99 were among people with confirmed measles infections. The distinction is maintained in the official reporting system because patients presenting with compatible symptoms may die before laboratory confirmation is established or may have another illness producing similar symptoms.

The latest daily increase comes against a prolonged period of measles transmission and a sustained rise in people seeking healthcare for fever, rash and other symptoms associated with the disease. Measles is highly contagious, particularly among children who have not received adequate vaccination. Severe cases can lead to complications, including pneumonia, dehydration and other serious health problems, especially among vulnerable patients.
The high number of suspected cases makes early assessment and appropriate clinical management particularly important. Health facilities need to distinguish measles from other illnesses with similar symptoms while ensuring that patients requiring urgent care receive treatment without delay.
The authorities’ cumulative figures show that the situation remains significant even when confirmed cases are considered separately. More than 140,000 suspected cases have been recorded since 15 March, while confirmed infections have crossed 17,500. The continued appearance of new cases and deaths means that surveillance, timely diagnosis, infection-control measures and vaccination efforts remain central to containing transmission.
With five additional deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period, the overall death toll has now reached 890. Health authorities are continuing to monitor new infections, suspected cases and fatalities as they assess the evolving measles situation across the country.
