Bangladesh Mob Violence Deaths Double in Six Months, HRSS Warns

Mob violence, extrajudicial lynchings, and labour rights violations have escalated dramatically across Bangladesh. Over the first six months of the year, at least 133 people were killed in 261 separate incidents of mob justice and vigilante violence. These figures, which represent a near-doubling of fatalities compared to the same period last year, were published in the latest semi-annual human rights monitoring report by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).

The report paints a grim picture of the country’s law and order situation between January and June. Vigilante justice was often meted out on the pretext of petty theft, robbery, personal disputes, local turf wars, and allegations of religious defamation. Beside the fatalities, these incidents left at least 256 people with severe injuries. By contrast, the first six months of 2025 saw 141 recorded incidents of mob violence, resulting in 67 deaths and 119 injuries.

HRSS compiled these findings through rigorous monitoring of reports from 16 major national daily newspapers, combined with its own grassroots data collection and independent fact-finding investigations.

Attacks on Minorities and Labour Rights Abuses On the Rise

The rights organisation expressed grave concern over a sharp increase in targeted violence against minority communities. The report documents 50 attacks on minorities over the six-month period, leaving 56 people injured. The violence also targeted physical property, with 19 temples vandalised, 15 deities destroyed, and 43 homes attacked. Four instances of illegal land grabbing were also verified.

This marks a steep rise from the first half of 2025, when 10 attacks on minorities resulted in four injuries, alongside damage to one temple, 11 deities, and 18 residential properties.

The report also highlights a worsening crisis within the labour sector, detailing severe abuses, hazardous working conditions, and suppression of protests.

Labour Rights and Workplace Safety Indicators (Jan–Jun)
=======================================================
Indicator                       |  2025  |  2026
--------------------------------|--------|--------
Labour abuse incidents          |  112   |  331
Workers killed in abuses        |   59   |   74
Workers injured in abuses       |  720   | 1,003
Workplace accident fatalities   |   43   |  216

According to the compiled data, 331 incidents of labour abuse resulted in 74 deaths and 1,003 injuries. Furthermore, 216 workers lost their lives in industrial accidents, primarily due to unsanitary working conditions and a lack of mandatory safety equipment. This is a dramatic surge from the 43 workplace deaths recorded during the equivalent period in 2025.

Compounding these issues, 26 workers were detained by law enforcement during demonstrations demanding unpaid wages and allowances. The domestic labour sector also remained highly vulnerable; two domestic workers were killed, four were injured, and two others died under highly suspicious circumstances.

Reflecting on the findings, Ejazul Islam, the Executive Director of HRSS, urged state institutions to adopt a more accountable and responsible approach to upholding the rule of law. He called upon citizens, journalists, civil society members, and sister rights organisations to play an active, vocal role in resisting the normalization of violence and protecting human rights across the country.
