Bangladesh Nationalist Party Worker Murdered In Jessore District

On Sunday, 21 June 2026, the body of a forty-two-year-old political worker affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was recovered in the Chougacha sub-district of the Jessore district, located in the south-western Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The deceased, officially identified as Atiar Rahman, was discovered dead with severe lacerations inflicted by sharp-edged weapons. Law enforcement personnel have since detained a thirty-year-old man, identified as Osman, in connection with the homicide. Atiar Rahman resided in Laskarpur village, situated within the Chougacha Sadar union council. His professional duties involved working as a security guard at the Bergobindapur baor, an oxbow lake that serves as a significant local water resource. In addition to his security work, Rahman managed an agricultural irrigation enterprise operating a deep tubewell adjacent to the lake. The Bergobindapur oxbow lake is a prominent geographical feature positioned at the intersection of the Chougacha Sadar, Singhajhuli, and Dhuliani union councils. Such water bodies are traditionally vital for regional agriculture and inland fisheries in Bangladesh.

According to the sequence of events detailed by Rahman’s younger brother, Rashed, the victim maintained a routine of returning to his family residence every morning after concluding his night shift. When Rahman failed to arrive home on the morning of Sunday, 21 June, his family members became concerned and commenced a search of his regular routes and the vicinity of his workplace. The search concluded at approximately 17:00 Bangladesh Standard Time, shortly after the Islamic Asr prayer, when Rahman’s twenty-six-year-old nephew, Hasan, located the remains. The body had been concealed beneath a dense layer of water hyacinths floating in a canal structurally integrated to regulate water flow into the Bergobindapur oxbow lake.

Following the discovery, a designated team from the Chougacha Police Station was dispatched to the specified coordinates to secure the scene and retrieve the body from the water channel. During this period, relatives of the deceased intercepted Osman, a resident of Fatepur village and the son of a local man named Hafizur. The family members subjected Osman to a physical assault based on suspicions of his involvement in the murder. Police officers at the scene intervened promptly to extract Osman from the altercation. He was taken into protective operational custody to prevent further public violence and to allow investigating officers to begin standard interrogation procedures.

The political identity of the victim was formally corroborated by regional leadership. M A Salam, who serves as the President of the Chougacha Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, one of the primary political organisations in Bangladesh, verified that Atiar Rahman was an active party worker. Additionally, the victim’s father, Chhabed Ali, occupies an official administrative role as an executive member of the party’s Chougacha Sadar Union unit.

President M A Salam disclosed that Rahman and his family were engaged in an extended, pre-existing conflict with an opposing local faction over the administrative control and management rights of the Bergobindapur oxbow lake. Conflicts over natural resources and fisheries frequently occur in rural Bangladesh, often leading to protracted legal and physical confrontations. According to Salam, this rival group had executed prior physical assaults against Rahman and his family members. Those previous altercations resulted in injuries and led to the victim’s family filing formal legal cases against the suspected assailants. The local party leadership has officially demanded the rapid apprehension and rigorous legal prosecution of all individuals involved in orchestrating and committing the murder.

Mamunur Rashid, the Officer-in-Charge of the Chougacha Police Station, validated the recovery of the deceased. The officer confirmed that standard administrative and legal preparations were in progress to transfer the body to the district hospital morgue. In accordance with standard criminal procedures in Bangladesh, a mandatory post-mortem examination must be conducted by forensic medical professionals to determine the exact cause of death in all suspected homicide cases.

The initial forensic assessment carried out by the attending police personnel at the crime scene documented multiple severe lacerations on Rahman’s body. The recorded injuries included a deep and fatal laceration traversing the throat, severe trauma inflicted upon the abdominal region by a sharp weapon, and an additional distinct laceration situated on the right side of the back, directly beneath the armpit.
