Bangladesh Pacers Make Significant Gains in ICC ODI Rankings

Bangladesh fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have made notable progress in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) One-Day International rankings, with both players moving closer to the world’s top 10 bowlers following their recent performances.

According to the updated rankings released on Wednesday (21 October), Taskin climbed nine places to 12th in the ODI bowling standings, while fellow pacer Shoriful advanced two positions to 11th.

The improvements represent an encouraging development for Bangladesh’s pace attack, particularly as the national side continues its international commitments in the United Arab Emirates.

Taskin’s substantial rise follows his impressive bowling performance in the ongoing tri-nation series involving Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

In Bangladesh’s opening match against Zimbabwe, the right-arm pacer claimed three wickets, delivering a noteworthy individual performance despite his team’s disappointing result. Bangladesh eventually suffered a 99-run defeat, but Taskin’s contribution provided a positive aspect of an otherwise difficult encounter.

His nine-place improvement reflects the impact of his recent bowling performances on his international standing. The ICC rankings assess players through a rating system that takes account of their performances and the quality of opposition.

Shoriful, meanwhile, has strengthened his position among the leading ODI bowlers. The left-arm fast bowler’s two-place rise has taken him to 11th, placing him immediately ahead of Taskin.

Having two pace bowlers positioned just outside the top 10 is a positive indication for Bangladesh, whose bowling attack relies heavily on the ability of its fast bowlers to secure early breakthroughs and maintain pressure during the middle and closing stages of an innings.

While Bangladesh’s pace duo enjoyed upward movement, Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan further consolidated his position at the top of the ODI bowling rankings.

Rashid delivered an outstanding performance against Zimbabwe, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs. His impressive figures helped lift his rating to 742 points, strengthening his advantage over the other leading bowlers.

Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed occupies second place in the rankings, followed by South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj in third. Rashid holds an 80-point advantage over his closest challengers, underlining his commanding position in international ODI cricket.

The Afghan spinner has established himself as one of the most effective bowlers in limited-overs cricket, combining wicket-taking ability with economical spells. His latest performance against Zimbabwe has further reinforced his standing.

Afghanistan also recorded a significant improvement in the ODI batting rankings, with Sedikullah Atal making one of the biggest advances in the latest update.

Atal climbed 12 places to 20th after producing an impressive century against Zimbabwe. The Afghan batter scored 102 runs from 110 deliveries, an innings that contributed significantly to his rise in the standings.

His progress reflects the importance of substantial individual performances in international cricket, particularly for emerging players seeking to establish themselves among the leading batters.

Elsewhere, Pakistan’s Salman Agha and England’s Ben Duckett also improved their positions following the series in Rawalpindi.

Salman moved up to 12th in the ODI batting rankings, while Duckett advanced to 13th. Their improvements were among several changes recorded in the latest assessment of international batting performances.

The rankings update also brought movement in Twenty20 International cricket following the series between India and the West Indies.

West Indies captain Shai Hope climbed two positions to ninth in the T20I batting rankings, securing a place among the world’s top 10 batters in the shortest international format.

Hope’s rise represents a positive development for the Caribbean side, which has traditionally relied on aggressive batting and individual match-winning contributions in T20 cricket.

His teammate Sherfane Rutherford also enjoyed a considerable improvement, advancing six places to 18th in the T20I batting standings.

Rutherford’s progress adds to the encouraging developments for the West Indies batting unit, with both players improving their positions following recent international appearances.

There was also good news for West Indies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who climbed 10 places to 26th in the T20I bowling rankings.

Motie’s advancement reflects the contribution of spin bowling in a format often associated with attacking batting and high scoring rates.

The ICC player rankings are updated regularly to reflect performances in international fixtures. Changes in individual ratings can result from several factors, including the quality of opposition, recent performances and the circumstances in which those performances occur.

For Bangladesh, the latest update is particularly significant because of the progress made by Taskin and Shoriful.

Taskin’s nine-place rise is especially encouraging given that his three-wicket performance came in a match Bangladesh lost heavily. It demonstrates how individual contributions can still receive recognition despite an unfavourable team result.

Shoriful’s advancement to 11th also places him within reach of the top 10, providing further encouragement for Bangladesh’s pace bowling department.

With both fast bowlers now occupying positions immediately outside the leading group, maintaining consistent performances in upcoming international matches will be crucial to their prospects of climbing further.

Their progress offers Bangladesh a welcome positive development as the national side seeks to strengthen its performances and achieve greater consistency in ODI cricket.
