The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered a significant reshuffle within the top tier of Bangladesh Police, reassigning two Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) to pivotal regional commands across the country.

According to an official notification issued on Thursday, 17th September, DIG Md Rezaul Karim, previously stationed at the Police Headquarters in Dhaka, has been appointed as the new DIG of the Khulna Range. Concurrently, DIG Md Mstafizur Rahman, who had been leading the Khulna Range, will take over the command of the Dhaka Range.

Signed by Deputy Secretary Taousif Ahmed on behalf of the ministry’s Public Security Division, the executive order explicitly noted that the postings have been enacted in the public interest and will take immediate effect. Consequently, both officers are expected to assume their administrative duties without delay.

Strategic Importance of Range Administration

Regional police ranges serve as critical pillars in maintaining law and order throughout Bangladesh’s administrative divisions. Operating above individual district police departments, a range DIG acts as the principal operational authority supervising District Superintendents of Police (SPs), directing inter-district investigations, and coordinating large-scale law enforcement strategies.

• Dhaka Range: Regarded as one of the most vital commands in the country, this jurisdiction encompasses several populous districts surrounding the capital. Managing crime prevention and public safety in this region requires immense operational vigilance and seasoned leadership.

• Khulna Range: Tasked with maintaining security across the south-western division, this range oversees sensitive border areas, trade corridors, and vital coastal belts.

Pattern of High-Level Reassignments

This latest reshuffle forms part of ongoing administrative adjustments within the police hierarchy. Reports indicate that several senior appointments at the DIG level have been finalized in recent months. Earlier this year in July, the government carried out a similar series of transfers across key units, including the Dhaka, Khulna, and Rajshahi ranges.

While official Gazettes rarely detail specific rationales behind senior transfers—relying instead on the standard “public interest” clause—such postings are routinely conducted to optimize operational efficiency, rotate leadership, and strengthen field administration. Both DIG Md Rezaul Karim and DIG Md Mstafizur Rahman will now lead all administrative and operational activities within their respective new ranges.
