Bangladesh Reach Historic High in Test Rankings

Bangladesh have reached their highest-ever position in the ICC Test team rankings after a memorable, if ultimately mixed, tour of Australia. Despite suffering a heavy defeat in the second Test at Mackay, the Tigers have climbed three places to sixth in the latest rankings, marking a new milestone in the history of their Test cricket.

The rankings were updated by the International Cricket Council on Sunday, 23 August, shortly after the conclusion of the Mackay Test. Bangladesh now have 78 rating points, taking them above Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies.

Before this latest update, Bangladesh’s best-ever position in the Test rankings was seventh. Their rise to sixth therefore represents the highest point they have reached in the format since becoming a Test-playing nation.

The achievement comes at the end of a two-Test series in Australia that produced contrasting results for Bangladesh. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side began the campaign in impressive fashion in Darwin, securing a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia, the world’s top-ranked Test team. The result was a significant achievement for Bangladesh, particularly given Australia’s strength and long-standing record in Test cricket.

The second Test at Mackay, however, proved a very different contest. Bangladesh were beaten by an innings and 51 runs, with the match concluding inside two days. The defeat prevented the visitors from completing a series victory, but it did not erase the significance of their success in Darwin.

Bangladesh’s rise has also altered the positions of several other teams. Sri Lanka have slipped to seventh with 76 rating points, while Pakistan are eighth with 75. The West Indies have fallen to ninth with 74 points.

The top five remain unchanged in the latest Test rankings. Australia occupy first place, followed by South Africa, New Zealand, India and England.

For Bangladesh, the timing of the rankings boost is particularly notable. Test cricket has traditionally demanded greater consistency from teams, especially when playing away from home. A victory against Australia, followed by a rise to a record sixth place, gives Bangladesh a tangible reward for their performance during the series.

The Mackay defeat will nevertheless leave the team with some frustration. Had Bangladesh won the second Test as well, they would have strengthened their rating further and potentially moved even closer to the leading sides.

Even so, the overall outcome of the Australian tour represents a significant chapter for Bangladesh Test cricket. The team demonstrated that it can challenge one of the strongest sides in the world on its own ground, while the latest ICC rankings have turned that performance into a historic statistical achievement. Sixth place is now Bangladesh’s new benchmark in Test cricket.
