Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman departed Dhaka in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 August, leading a high-level official delegation to Qatar on a two-day diplomatic mission aimed primarily at securing uninterrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.
According to an official press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visiting delegation features several key figures within the administration’s economic and foreign policy leadership. Accompanying the foreign minister are the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning, the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, and the State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, alongside senior ministry officials.
During their stay in Doha, the Bangladeshi officials will participate in a series of high-level bilateral meetings with Qatari government ministers, state-owned energy executives, and commercial leadership. Discussions will focus on long-term energy security, bilateral trade enhancement, and broader economic partnership, with the primary target being the stabilization and guarantee of Qatar’s LNG deliveries to Bangladesh. The foreign minister and his delegation are scheduled to wrap up their official itinerary and return to Dhaka on Thursday night.
The high-stakes diplomatic effort comes at a pivotal moment for Bangladesh as it seeks to manage rising domestic energy consumption alongside supply deficits across key industrial, manufacturing, and power generation sectors. With domestic natural gas fields experiencing steady depletion, imported LNG has become indispensable for powering the national grid. Qatar remains Bangladesh’s chief long-term energy supplier, fulfilling significant annual quotas under existing government-to-government purchase agreements.
Volatile global energy markets and supply chain vulnerabilities have periodically disrupted procurement stability, prompting Dhaka to take proactive diplomatic measures. Sending a top-tier delegation that combines diplomatic, financial, and energy leadership highlights the critical importance attached to securing predictable fuel shipments. Uninterrupted gas supplies remain crucial for sustaining output across the nation’s ready-made garment export industry, power production, and agricultural fertilizer plants.
