Ronaldo Marks Al Nassr Return with Milestone Goal

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to club football with a goal for Al Nassr, reaching 980 career goals as his side secured a convincing 3–0 victory over Al Diriyah in Saudi Arabia. The 41-year-old forward returned to action a week after leaving Portugal’s national team camp, responding to recent controversy with a decisive performance on the pitch.

Ronaldo’s return was particularly significant following discussions surrounding his role in Portugal’s national team and his reported disagreement with the coaching staff. While opinions remained divided over the incident, Al Nassr supporters made their backing for the Portuguese superstar unmistakable.

The controversy began on 27 September, when Portugal defeated Norway 2–1 in a UEFA Nations League fixture. Ronaldo remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout the match and was not brought on. He subsequently left the national team camp.

Ronaldo later said that Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus had failed to honour a promise made to him. The pair had worked together at the Saudi Arabian club during the previous season, making the reported disagreement a subject of considerable attention.

However, the reception Ronaldo received upon returning to Saudi Pro League action demonstrated the strength of his connection with Al Nassr’s supporters.

Before kick-off, fans unveiled a large banner bearing the message, ‘Greatness is earned’, alongside Ronaldo’s iconic number seven. In the seventh minute, supporters chanted his name, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere inside the stadium.

Ronaldo responded in the 23rd minute, opening the scoring after a shot from former Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman was not held by Al Diriyah goalkeeper Walid Ali. Ronaldo reacted quickly to the rebound and guided the ball into the net, giving Al Nassr the lead.

The goal brought his career tally to 980, adding another milestone to a remarkable career spanning club and international football.

Al Nassr continued to dominate proceedings. Samu Costa doubled the advantage in the 35th minute, giving the home side greater control before the interval. Coman then completed the scoring in the 77th minute, securing a comfortable 3–0 victory.

The result kept Al Nassr level on points with Al Qadsiah at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings. However, Al Nassr remained behind their rivals on goal difference. With several lower-ranked teams still due to play over the weekend, the standings could change further.

After the match, Ronaldo shared a photograph of his goal celebration on social media, accompanied by the message: ‘Job done. Next game!’

The brief statement suggested that the forward was already looking ahead to his next challenge, putting the recent controversy behind him as he continued his club campaign.

Ronaldo’s international record remains equally impressive. He has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him one of the most prolific international goalscorers in football history.

Earlier in the week, he issued a statement confirming that he remained available for national team duty. However, it is still unclear whether his departure from the Portugal camp will result in any disciplinary action.

For now, his return to Al Nassr has provided a timely reminder of his continued influence on the pitch. Despite being 41, Ronaldo remains a central figure for his club, combining his goalscoring ability with the determination that has defined his career.

His latest performance will also reassure Al Nassr supporters that he remains focused on helping the team compete for honours, even as questions surrounding his international future remain unresolved.
