Popular Bangladeshi singer, composer and music arranger Bappa Mazumder is set to return to the stage with a special solo musical evening for his fans. Titled ‘Moonlit Melodies’, the concert will take place on 9 October at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in the capital.
The event is being organised by Mavix Global, an event management company that has previously staged several music programmes, including the ‘Ganjowar’ concert for students at the Hatirjheel Amphitheatre. The upcoming show will give audiences an opportunity to hear some of Bappa’s best-known songs in a dedicated solo performance.
Bappa shared the official poster for ‘Moonlit Melodies’ on his Facebook page on 13 September. In the post, he asked his fans to save the date for the concert, prompting interest among listeners who have followed his work over the years.
According to information about the event, Bappa is expected to perform several popular songs from his repertoire, including ‘Pori’, ‘Baji’ and ‘Din Bari Jay’. The final setlist, however, has not been announced.
Tickets for the concert have not yet gone on sale. Mavix Global said details regarding ticket prices, purchasing procedures, the programme schedule and other arrangements will be announced shortly. Until those details are released, audiences will have to wait for confirmation of the full format of the evening.
The concert is also significant because Bappa has generally appeared more frequently on stage with his band Dalchhut than in solo concerts. As the frontman of Dalchhut, he has remained an important figure in Bangladesh’s contemporary music scene while simultaneously developing a successful career as a solo singer.
Although solo concerts by Bappa have been relatively limited, he has performed in several such events in recent years. He held a solo concert in 2022. In 2024, Karkhana Event Management and Blues Communication jointly organised ‘Odyssey’, another solo concert featuring Bappa. During that programme, he performed some of his popular songs as well as songs he had composed for the film ‘Satta’.
On 12 July last year, Bappa appeared in another solo concert at Yamaha Music Lounge in Tejgaon, Dhaka. More recently, on 12 July this year, a special musical evening was organised at Jatrabiriti in Banani to honour his contribution to music over three decades. Although it was not Bappa’s own solo show, eight younger-generation singers performed his songs as a tribute to his long career.
Bappa’s contribution to Bangladeshi music extends well beyond singing. He has composed and arranged songs for a wide range of established performers. Artists including Fahmida Nabi, Samina Chowdhury, Nancy, Kona, Elita and Konal have recorded songs composed by him.
His work has also featured prominently in film music. Singers such as James, Momtaz, Samina Chowdhury, Partha Barua and Kona have lent their voices to songs composed by Bappa for films, further broadening his contribution to the country’s music industry.
Bappa has also continued to collaborate with prominent artists. Last year, he joined legendary singer Runa Laila for ‘Anayase’, a ghazal-style song. The collaboration brought together two distinctive voices from different generations of Bangladeshi music.
His latest release came on 22 August with ‘Gole Jawa Shomoy’, a song for which Bappa wrote the lyrics, composed the tune and handled the musical arrangement, in addition to providing the vocals.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Bappa Mazumder has established himself as both a performer and a creative force behind the music. ‘Moonlit Melodies’ will offer his audience another opportunity to experience that body of work in a dedicated live setting, with his familiar songs taking centre stage.
