Barcelona have agreed a package worth roughly $76.5 million (£58 million / €71.5 million) to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, securing one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer window. A source within the Catalan hierarchy confirmed that final details between the two clubs have been settled, with a formal announcement expected within the coming days.
The 30-year-old Spaniard arrives in Barcelona following an exceptional summer on the international stage. As captain of Spain, Rodri guided his national side to World Cup glory in July, defeating Argentina in the final. His commanding performances throughout the tournament earned him the Golden Ball award as the competition’s best player. Although Real Madrid also mounted a strong bid to secure his signature, the midfielder opted for a return to Spain with their traditional El Clásico rivals.
Since joining Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri established himself as a central pivot in Pep Guardiola’s dominant side. Over seven years in the Premier League, he collected 12 major trophies, including four league titles and the 2023 UEFA Champions League, where he scored the decisive goal in the final. His individual excellence was crowned in 2024 when he won the Ballon d’Or. Despite missing spells of football over the past two seasons due to injury setbacks, his standing as an elite controlling midfielder remains intact.
Barcelona’s pursuit was largely driven by pressing personnel needs in central midfield. A serious injury to Dutch international Frenkie de Jong left manager Hansi Flick short of proven top-tier experience in the engine room. City initially rejected two approaches from Barcelona before reaching a breakthrough, with the player keen on leading Barcelona’s midfield overhaul.
Rodri becomes the headline addition to an active summer recruitment campaign at Camp Nou, which has already seen the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and Jesse Bisiwu. The club is also concluding negotiations to bring full-back João Cancelo back to Catalonia on a permanent deal following his loan spell from Saudi outfit Al-Hilal.
Rodri will link up with several international teammates at Barcelona, including Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and goalkeeper Joan García. He is set to sign a four-year contract subject to a medical.
