Pop icon Beyoncé has made an unexpected return to the global music scene, releasing her brand-new single, “Morning Dew (Donk)”. Arriving with absolutely no prior marketing or public announcement, the track marks her first major release since dominating the global charts with her critically acclaimed 2024 country-inspired album, Cowboy Carter. This surprise deployment officially initiates the countdown toward the 20th anniversary celebrations of her seminal sophomore solo album, B’Day.
B’Day was originally launched in September 2006, cementing her status as an independent global powerhouse following her departure from Destiny’s Child. The album enjoyed staggering commercial success, moving nearly 550,000 copies in its opening week alone. With the milestone 20th anniversary approaching this autumn, her production company, Parkwood Entertainment, has confirmed that a special celebratory edition of the album will be released on 4 September, intentionally aligning with the singer’s 45th birthday. The newly released single is set to be a core feature of this upcoming anniversary package.
Whilst “Morning Dew (Donk)” has only just received an official commercial release, its studio origins date back over a decade. The track was originally written and recorded in 2013 during the intensive creative sessions for her self-titled visual album, Beyoncé, but was ultimately left in the vault. The song found an unexpected second life in 2023 when an unreleased demo version leaked online, rapidly sparking a massive viral phenomenon on TikTok. Driven by overwhelming fan demand and relentless online campaign programmes, the singer’s management entity made the definitive decision to master and officially release the track.
The track boasts an elite lineup of contemporary pop and R&B songwriters. It was co-written by Beyoncé alongside longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams, Angela Sherree Woods, Darius Dixon, and Terius Gesteelde-Diamant, famously known as The-Dream. Production duties were handled jointly by Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams. The track has already begun dominating real-time metrics across major global streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.
To accompany the audio release, Beyoncé debuted a striking black-and-white music video on her official YouTube channel. The project was directed by her frequent creative partner, the renowned fashion photographer Cliff Watts. The video relies heavily on nostalgia, utilising never-before-seen archival footage captured in 2007 during her historic cover shoot for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
This unreleased footage provides an intimate glimpse into an iconic era of her career. By pairing the vaulted track with historical visuals, the release offers a textured, retrospective experience. It effectively bridges the gap between her contemporary experimentation and her mid-2000s musical peak, offering a highly sentimental gift to her dedicated global fanbase.
