Bayern Munich have made a winning start to the 2026–27 campaign, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2–1 at Signal Iduna Park to lift their first trophy of the season.
The victory, secured on Saturday night, saw the Bavarian giants claim the German Cup for the 12th time in their history. Bayern established a two-goal advantage before half-time and then survived a determined Dortmund fightback after the interval.
The visitors took the lead in the 28th minute when Nathaniel Brown capitalised on a defensive error. Dortmund failed to clear the ball from danger, allowing Brown to take advantage and find the net.
Dortmund appeared to have restored parity in the 42nd minute, but their effort was ruled out for offside. The hosts were left frustrated, and Bayern soon punished them again.
In first-half stoppage time, Michael Olise doubled Bayern’s advantage with an excellent individual finish. The French forward showed composure as he worked his way past two Dortmund defenders before placing the ball beyond the goalkeeper. Bayern therefore went into the interval with a commanding 2–0 lead.
Dortmund returned for the second half with far greater urgency. Playing in front of their home supporters, they pushed Bayern deeper and began creating sustained pressure around the visitors’ penalty area.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 75th minute. Fabio Silva pulled one goal back to make it 2–1, setting up a tense final quarter of the match.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium. Dortmund pressed forward repeatedly during the closing stages, searching for an equaliser. Bayern, however, defended resolutely and managed the pressure effectively. Despite several attacking attempts from the hosts, the equalising goal never arrived.
Bayern eventually held on to secure a 2–1 victory and begin the new campaign with silverware.
The match was also a memorable occasion for Morocco international Ismael Saibari. Having joined Bayern in July, he made his first competitive appearance for the club when he came off the bench in the 81st minute, replacing Nathaniel Brown.
Saibari’s introduction came during a tense period of the contest, but he ultimately experienced a winning debut and collected his first major trophy with the club almost immediately after joining.
For Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, the result provides an encouraging platform for the season ahead. The team showed both attacking quality in the first half and defensive resilience when Dortmund mounted a late challenge.
Attention now turns to the Bundesliga, where Bayern will begin their title defence against Stuttgart on Friday night. Having already secured one piece of silverware, Kompany and his players will be looking to carry that momentum into the league campaign.
