BGB Seizes Firearms and BDT 50 Million Crystal Meth

Security forces have dealt a significant blow to cross-border contraband networks in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. In a high-stakes nighttime operation, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel intercepted a smuggling attempt in Khagrachari, recovering a substantial cache of crystal methamphetamine alongside foreign firearms and live ammunition.
The raid was conducted late Tuesday night (August 18) by the Yaminipara Battalion (23 BGB) in the remote Yaminipara area of Matiranga upazila.
According to official accounts, BGB intelligence had gathered credible information regarding illicit trafficking activities in the border zone. Acting on this intelligence, a specialised patrol team led directly by the battalion commander established a mobile checkpoint at the Gourangapara three-way intersection. At approximately 2:40 am, a motorcycle carrying two individuals approached the checkpoint from the direction of Panchari.
Upon noticing the security personnel, the rider initially slowed down before executing a sudden U-turn in an attempt to escape toward Paindang. BGB members immediately initiated a pursuit. The high-speed chase extended for two to three kilometres before the fleeing suspects veered off the primary paved road and onto a narrow dirt track in the Birashitila area.
Inclement weather conditions, including heavy rain, muddy terrain, pitch-black darkness, and a narrow pathway, widened the physical gap between the patrol vehicle and the fleeing motorcycle. Capitalising on the poor visibility and rugged landscape, the suspects abandoned their vehicle beneath a roadside culvert and fled into the dense, hilly jungle.
Upon securing the abandoned motorcycle, BGB personnel conducted a thorough search of the vehicle. Hidden beneath the seat, they uncovered two foreign pistols complete with magazines, ten rounds of live ammunition, and a massive consignment of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.”
Lieutenant Colonel Md Khalid Ibn Hossain, commander of the Yaminipara BGB zone, briefed the media on the operation. He stated that the estimated street value of the recovered synthetic narcotics approaches five billion local currency units, marking the first time such a substantial quantity of crystal meth has been seized in this sector. Senior officials reiterated that rigorous patrols and intelligence-led operations will persist along vulnerable border corridors to suppress transnational arms and drug smuggling syndicates.
