Butler’s Blitz Seals England’s 4-0 T20 Whitewash

England produced a commanding performance to defeat India by 56 runs in the fourth match of their five-match Twenty20 International series, completing a 4-0 series whitewash and reclaiming the top position in the T20 world rankings. The victory at Southampton was powered by a remarkable century from captain Jos Buttler, who ended a three-year wait for an international hundred with a breathtaking display of power hitting.

The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batter played one of the finest T20 innings of his career, smashing 131 runs from 51 deliveries with eight sixes. His aggressive stroke play set the tone for England’s dominant batting performance and put India under immense pressure from the beginning.

Buttler formed a record-breaking third-wicket partnership of 233 runs with England captain Harry Brook, marking the highest partnership for England in T20 internationals. Brook played a superb supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 95 runs as England posted a massive total of 257 for three wickets — their second-highest score in the format.

Buttler began his assault early, hitting the first six of the match over mid-on with a powerful stroke. Brook received a crucial reprieve when Shivam Dube dropped a straightforward catch when he was on three runs. The England captain made India pay for the mistake, responding with two consecutive sixes off Prasidh Yadav’s bowling.

Buttler reached his century in just 51 balls, completing the milestone in spectacular fashion by clearing square leg for a six against Axar Patel. He continued attacking until he was eventually dismissed by Dube’s bowling after being caught at mid-off by Shreyas Iyer. However, by then he had already done enough damage, leaving England in a commanding position.

Chasing an imposing target, India struggled to maintain the required scoring rate despite some promising contributions from their batters. Sanju Samson, brought into the side in place of Suryavanshi, struck two sixes but was dismissed for 27 after edging Sam Curran’s first delivery to Jacob Bethell.

Captain Shreyas Iyer attempted to rebuild the innings alongside Ishan Kishan, with the pair adding 55 runs for the third wicket. However, spinner Liam Dawson broke the partnership by removing Iyer, putting India under further pressure.

Kishan scored a valuable half-century but his dismissal proved to be a turning point. Phil Salt produced an outstanding catch, sprinting from deep mid-wicket to complete a difficult chance off Adil Rashid’s bowling. The moment effectively ended India’s hopes of chasing down the huge target.

Tilak Varma provided some resistance with a 53-run knock, but he too fell to a catch by Buttler, who completed three catches during an impressive all-round performance. India eventually finished on 201 for eight wickets, falling well short of England’s total.

For England, the victory was another statement of their strength in the shortest format, particularly against the reigning T20 world champions. Buttler’s return to form will be a major boost ahead of upcoming challenges, while the team’s batting depth and aggressive approach once again highlighted their dominance in white-ball cricket.

The two sides will now turn their attention to the three-match One Day International series, which begins in Birmingham on Tuesday. The tour also carries significance for India’s legendary batter Virat Kohli, who has already retired from Test and T20 international cricket, with this potentially being his final visit to England as a player.
