Chhatra League Rally Held in Feni

A protest rally organised by the Feni Government College unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League took place in the Lalpul area of the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Feni on Friday morning, with participants reportedly gathering before police reached the scene.

According to local sources, more than one hundred activists joined the procession, which was held on 31 July. The rally was led by Noman Habib, President of the Feni Government College Chhatra League unit. He was seen at the front of the procession wearing a white T-shirt as participants marched through the area while chanting slogans.

Witnesses said the rally moved along a section of the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway before heading towards Chhanua Union in Feni Sadar Upazila. The procession lasted only a short time and dispersed before any immediate police intervention was reported.

Images and video footage of the rally were later shared on Facebook by Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim, former Awami League Member of Parliament for the Feni-1 constituency. The posts appeared on his verified Facebook account at around 11:26 a.m. on Friday.

In his Facebook post, Nasim said the rally was organised to demand the withdrawal of restrictions imposed on the Awami League, the cancellation of the sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the withdrawal of cases filed against party leaders and activists, and the unconditional release of what he described as political prisoners. He also expressed gratitude to those who took part in the demonstration and concluded his message with the slogan, “Joy Bangla.”

The videos and photographs circulating on social media quickly drew public attention, prompting local law enforcement agencies to begin verifying the incident. Police officials said they are examining the available footage alongside information gathered from the area to establish the circumstances surrounding the procession.

Nishat Tabassum, Additional Superintendent of Police (Feni Sadar Circle), said the matter first came to the attention of the police through social media. She confirmed that officers were collecting information and looking into the incident before deciding on any further course of action.

Sajal Kanti Das, Investigation Officer at Feni Model Police Station, said a police team was dispatched to the Lalpul area immediately after receiving reports of the rally. Officers have since spoken with local residents, shopkeepers and other potential witnesses while reviewing available evidence, including images and videos shared online.

He added that the findings of the investigation would determine whether any legal action is warranted. Police have not yet released further details regarding the identities of all those involved or the outcome of the inquiry.

The Dhaka–Chattogram Highway is one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport corridors, carrying thousands of vehicles each day. Any public gathering along the route is closely monitored because of its potential impact on traffic and public safety. According to available information, no major disruption to vehicular movement or any untoward incident was reported during Friday’s procession.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and police have indicated that further updates will be provided once the inquiry is completed.
