Police have recovered the body of an unidentified woman from a wooded area inside the Jhilmil Residential Project in South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, after local boys stumbled upon the remains while searching for a football on Friday morning.
According to police, the body was discovered after a group of teenagers had been playing football, as they regularly do, within the residential project. During the game, the ball rolled into a nearby stretch of dense woodland. When several of the boys entered the area to retrieve it, they were shocked to find the body of a woman lying on the ground. They immediately alerted nearby residents, who in turn informed the South Keraniganj Police Station.
Responding officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, recovered the body and secured the area as part of the initial investigation. The deceased has not yet been identified, and police said no immediate information regarding her identity or place of residence was available.
The body has been sent to the morgue at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, commonly known as Mitford Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators expect the examination to provide crucial forensic evidence that may help establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Local shopkeeper Abu Sayeed Mia said boys from different neighbourhoods gather almost every morning to play football inside the Jhilmil Residential Project. Friday’s game appeared no different until the ball disappeared into the adjoining woodland. Moments later, the youngsters emerged visibly distressed after discovering the woman’s body, prompting residents to contact the police without delay.
Officer-in-Charge Saiful Alam of South Keraniganj Police Station said the woman’s body bore visible injury marks. Based on preliminary observations, investigators suspect that she may have been killed elsewhere before her body was abandoned in the secluded woodland. He stressed, however, that the exact cause of death and the sequence of events would only become clear after the post-mortem examination and further forensic analysis.
Police have launched a formal investigation to establish the victim’s identity and uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene and examining all available leads to determine how the woman died and who may have been responsible.
Authorities said efforts are continuing to identify the deceased and bring those involved to justice. The investigation remains ongoing.
