Child Dies Following Delayed Snakebite Treatment

A five-year-old boy has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Charbhadrasan Upazila of Faridpur District, prompting widespread grief in the local community and renewed concern over delays in seeking emergency medical care in rural areas.

The victim, identified as Sheikh Abdullah (5), was the youngest child of Sheikh Shahed from Char Amarapur village under Gazirtek Union. He was one of three siblings and was described by family members as a playful child who spent most of his time playing around his home.

According to relatives, the incident occurred on Saturday morning (20 June) at approximately 9:00 am, when Abdullah was playing behind his house. While exploring near a concrete slab, he unknowingly placed his foot near a venomous snake hidden underneath and was bitten.

Immediately after the incident, the child returned to his home and told his mother that he had been “bitten by a frog,” a misunderstanding that significantly delayed the recognition of the severity of the situation. Believing it to be a minor injury, the family initially did not seek formal medical treatment and instead relied on local informal practices.

Shortly afterwards, the child was taken to a local traditional healer, commonly referred to in the area as a “fakir.” After an informal assessment, the healer reportedly dismissed the possibility of a snakebite, further reinforcing the family’s initial misunderstanding. This led to a critical loss of time during which the venom continued to spread through the child’s body.

As the boy’s condition deteriorated rapidly, the family eventually rushed him to a hospital in Faridpur. Medical staff attempted emergency treatment upon arrival, but he was declared dead at around 12:00 noon on the same day. Doctors indicated that the effects of the venom had already caused severe systemic complications by the time proper medical care was initiated.

Local authorities confirmed the incident. Chairman of Gazirtek Union Parishad, Yakub Ali, stated that the child was first taken to non-medical traditional treatment before being brought to hospital in a critical condition.

Medical experts routinely stress that snakebites should always be treated as a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate hospital care. Delays caused by misinterpretation, traditional remedies, or attempts at informal treatment can significantly increase the risk of fatal outcomes.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for greater public awareness in rural communities about recognising snakebites and ensuring rapid access to professional medical treatment.
