Economist and former Chairman of Janata Bank, Dr Abul Barakat, has been released from prison after being granted bail in a case filed with New Market Police Station in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud. He was released from custody on Saturday following the bail order issued by the court.
According to case records, the legal proceedings involved multiple stages across different judicial forums in Dhaka. On Tuesday (16 June), a hearing on the bail petition filed on behalf of Dr Barakat was held before the Court of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Dhaka, presided over by Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman. Following the hearing, the court granted him bail.
Prior to this decision, on Monday (15 June), the bail application had been rejected by the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin in the same case. Earlier procedural developments also included an order from the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam on Sunday, which formally recorded Dr Barakat’s arrest in the Abdul Wadud murder case.
Subsequently, an appeal was filed against the rejection order at a higher judicial level. Following review, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court granted bail on Tuesday, overturning the earlier refusal. Acting on this order, Dr Abul Barakat was released from prison on Saturday.
