Security forces operating along Bangladesh’s southeastern frontier have intercepted a major narcotics smuggling operation, seizing 14 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 5,000 methamphetamine pills locally known as yaba, and 20 bottles of foreign liquor in separate raids near Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

The operations, conducted jointly by the Coast Guard stations of Teknaf and Shah Pari’s Island, targeted smuggling routes along the Naaf River, a stretch of water that forms part of the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Acting on intelligence that two sizable consignments of crystal meth were set to cross into Bangladeshi territory, security personnel laid an ambush between 1:00 am and 3:00 am on Tuesday.

As Coast Guard officers approached, the smugglers attempted to escape under the cover of darkness. They beached two wooden boats in the dense mangrove and keora forests of Jaliar Dwip and Jalia Para before fleeing into the foliage. A thorough search of the abandoned vessels revealed 14 kilograms of high-grade crystal methamphetamine expertly concealed inside tea packets to evade detection, alongside 20 bottles of imported alcohol. Both wooden craft were impounded on the spot.

In a linked action taking place around 10:00 pm on Tuesday night, Coast Guard personnel intercepted a suspect near a petrol pump in the Palongkhali area of Ukhiya. A physical search yielded 5,000 yaba tablets. The individual was detained at the scene and subsequently identified as 22-year-old Mohammad Mostafa, a resident of Ward 8 under Palongkhali Union in Ukhiya, and son of Abdul Hakim.

Lieutenant Commander Arafat Hossain, Commander of the Teknaf Coast Guard Station, detailed the operational outcomes during a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon. He emphasised that surveillance and targeted intelligence gathering across the border zone have been intensified to dismantle the broader criminal syndicates directing these movements.

The border regions of Teknaf and Ukhiya remain primary points of entry for illicit synthetic drugs produced in volatile zones across the Myanmar border. Crystal methamphetamine, locally dubbed ‘ice’, represents a dramatically more potent and lucrative trade than traditional yaba, posing severe challenges for local law enforcement.

Formal legal proceedings against the detained suspect and official evidence logging for the seized contraband are currently underway.
