A 22-year-old college student was killed and another person injured after a motorcycle collided with a truck in Maheshpur of Jhenaidah on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Rion, son of Montu Member of Krishnachandrapur village in Maheshpur. He was a second-year honours student at Jashore Cantonment College.
The accident occurred at around 10.30pm on Tuesday (6 October) at Kata Khali on the Khalishpur-Kaliganj highway.
According to police and the family of the deceased, Rion had travelled to Kaliganj on Tuesday evening to buy a mobile phone. After making the purchase, he was returning home on his motorcycle. Nafiz was travelling with him.
When they reached the Kata Khali area, their motorcycle collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact left both motorcycle riders injured. Rion sustained critical injuries and died in the accident, while Nafiz was injured.
Local people responded to the crash and helped with the rescue operation. Nafiz was subsequently taken to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Details about the extent of his injuries were not immediately available.
The accident has left Rion’s family and local community in mourning. As a young student pursuing higher education, his sudden death has also caused distress among those who knew him.
Police later visited the accident scene and took the truck into custody. The driver was also detained in connection with the crash.
Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azad Rahman confirmed the incident. He said police went to the scene after receiving information about the accident and subsequently seized the truck and detained its driver.
Road collisions involving motorcycles and larger vehicles can have particularly serious consequences because motorcyclists have far less physical protection in a crash. On highways and major connecting roads, the difference in size and weight between motorcycles and heavy vehicles can make even a single collision fatal.
The authorities are now handling the necessary legal procedures following the accident. The circumstances surrounding the collision, including how the two vehicles came into contact, will be considered as part of the investigation.
The incident has once again brought attention to road safety on the Khalishpur-Kaliganj highway, where motorcycles, trucks and other vehicles share the same route. For families such as Rion’s, however, the immediate concern is the sudden loss of a young member whose life and education were cut short on the road.
