The recent cancellation of musical concerts in Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj within a span of just two days has ignited a fresh wave of anxiety regarding cultural freedom and safety in Bangladesh. Artists, musicians, and event organisers are increasingly questioning the current state of cultural security, pointing out that abrupt cancellations at the eleventh hour undermine artistic expression and foster an environment of deep uncertainty.
When cultural events are halted without prior dialogue, the repercussions extend far beyond the headline performers. The economic blow hits an entire ecosystem of professionals, including instrumentalists, stage hands, sound and lighting technicians, and local vendors who rely on these events for their livelihoods.
Voices from the Cultural Community
Veteran composer and musician Sheikh Sadi Khan noted that culture transcends political factions. Emphasising that every nation is defined by its distinct artistic heritage, he argued that shutting down events in a culturally rich district like Brahmanbaria directly contradicts the region’s history.
“If there are concerns regarding noise levels, adjustments can always be made,” Khan remarked. “Solutions should be pursued through dialogue rather than resorting to outright bans.” He urged the administration to establish a clear policy stance that guarantees the safety of artistic endeavours, stressing that a society’s identity is deeply intertwined with its music, literature, and folk traditions.
Legendary playback singer Sabina Yasmên focused heavily on the financial and psychological toll exacted on performers and organisers. While acknowledging that individuals possess the right to choose what they watch or listen to, she maintained that personal preferences should not serve as grounds for shutting down public productions.
“If any state body or authority holds reservations, those concerns must be communicated well in advance,” Yasmên stated. “Last-minute cancellations inflict severe economic losses and discourage artists from pursuing their craft.” She reiterated that while events must remain orderly and transparent, music is vital to the emotional fabric of the nation and requires state protection.
The Shadow of Impunity and Administrative Clarity
Adding a broader perspective, rock musician and band star Hamin Ahmed pointed out that abrupt demands for registration or last-minute administrative pretexts often mask ideological intolerance. He cautioned that a failure to take firm action against disruptions in recent years risks emboldening fringe groups to continue targeting cultural gatherings.
As artists and organisers call for structured safeguards, the consensus remains clear. The cultural community is not asking for exemptions from the law, but rather for clear, consistent guidelines, early coordination, and a secure environment where artistic expression can thrive without the constant threat of disruption.
