A medical practitioner was arrested late on Monday night from a restaurant in Sherpur upazila of Bogura while attending a birthday gathering, in a case linked to an ongoing explosives-related investigation.
Police detained Dr Samir Hossain Mishu at around 11:30 pm from a Chinese restaurant in the upazila town. The arrest took place during a birthday celebration organised for a fellow doctor, where he was present as a guest.
According to law enforcement officials, Dr Mishu is a resident of Jaleshwaritala area in Bogura city and is currently employed in Bagerhat. Officers stated that he was taken into custody following information received through intelligence sources, which led to a targeted operation at the venue.
Authorities confirmed that Dr Mishu is an accused in a case filed under the Explosives Act with Bogura Sadar Police Station. The case is understood to be connected to events surrounding the student and public protests of August 2024, during which multiple incidents led to the filing of criminal cases across the district.
Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Police Station, SM Moinuddin, said the arrest was made in connection with the existing warrant and case records. Following the detention, initial legal procedures were completed at Sherpur Police Station before he was transferred to Bogura Sadar Police Station for further investigation.
Police at Bogura Sadar have indicated that the case remains under active investigation. OC Ibrahim Ali stated that Dr Mishu’s name appears in the explosives case file and that investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances and evidence surrounding the allegations.
Dr Mishu is known within local medical circles and has reportedly served as president of the Bogura district unit of a professional doctors’ organisation. He has also been described by sources as being associated with political activities linked to the Awami League, although authorities have not issued any formal statement detailing the extent of such involvement.
The arrest has generated discussion within both medical and local political communities in Bogura, with reactions emerging over the timing and setting of the detention. Law enforcement officials, however, maintained that arrests are carried out strictly based on legal grounds, regardless of location or professional background.
Police added that further steps will depend on the progress of the investigation. Relevant documents are being reviewed, and questioning is expected to continue as part of standard procedure before the case proceeds under court direction.
