A joint security operation in the capital’s eastern neighborhood of Demra culminated in the arrest of a 26-year-old man following the discovery of two objects resembling improvised explosive devices. The raid, spearheaded by Bangladesh’s specialized Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit in coordination with local Anti-Terrorism Officers (ATO), also led to the detention of a second youth as investigators move swiftly to assess the potential security implications.
The operation played out at approximately 5:30 pm on Sunday, 16 August, near the Gariber Newaz Mosque road intersection in the Paschim Boxnagar Nijhumbag locality of Demra. Acting on precise intelligence indicating suspicious movement near the busy thoroughfare, a specialized combined strike team established a discreet perimeter before moving in to intercept the primary suspect. Officers identified him as Jewel Bhuiyan, son of Abul Bhuiyan, hailing from Kajirchar village in the Shibpur sub-district of Narsingdi.
A targeted search at the scene uncovered two cylindrical objects measuring roughly six inches in length, bound tightly in black electrical tape. The physical profile and construction of the items triggered immediate safety protocols, prompting officers to treat them as active improvised explosive devices. Alongside Bhuiyan’s arrest, security forces detained 24-year-old Arif Chowdhury, a resident of the immediate Nijhumbag neighborhood and son of Abdul Hai, to determine his possible involvement in housing or transporting the suspect material.
With the recovery confirmed, senior officers and additional personnel from Demra Police Station rushed to reinforce the scene, cordoning off the immediate vicinity to protect bystanders. Bomb disposal specialists subsequently took custody of the physical evidence for detailed forensic analysis, while both suspects were transferred to police custody for joint interrogation by intelligence officers and local investigators.
The CTTC and ATO units routinely monitor urban peripheries around Dhaka to pre-empt security threats and dismantle illegal arms or explosive networks. Demra Police Station confirmed that formal legal proceedings under the Explosive Substances Act and relevant national security statutes are being prepared against the suspects. Local authorities reassured residents that public safety in the Paschim Boxnagar sector was restored swiftly, with heightened patrols remaining in place while intelligence officers trace the origins and intended destination of the seized devices.
