Police have recovered the bodies of a husband and wife from their home in Shoronkhola Upazila of Bagerhat, with investigators awaiting post-mortem findings to determine the exact cause of their deaths.
The bodies of Mohammad Kabir Hossain and his wife, Halima Begum, were recovered from their residence in Rajair village at around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (16 July). The incident has shocked local residents and prompted an investigation by the police.
Kabir Hossain, the son of Abdul Majid of Rajair village, worked as a fisherman. The couple are survived by two young children, one aged five years and the other only two months old. Their sudden deaths have left the family and neighbours in deep mourning, with concern growing over the future of the children.
Police said officers recovered a handwritten note from the scene while conducting an initial examination of the house. According to investigators, the note stated that no one should be held responsible for the deaths and suggested that the couple had chosen to end their lives voluntarily.
However, investigators stressed that the discovery of the note does not by itself establish the cause or circumstances of the deaths. Police said all available evidence would be carefully examined before reaching any conclusion, and no possibility has been ruled out at this stage.
Local residents claimed that the couple had experienced ongoing domestic disputes for a considerable period. Some neighbours believe those family tensions may have contributed to the incident. Police, however, said such claims would be assessed as part of the investigation and should not be treated as confirmed facts before the inquiry is completed.
Officer-in-Charge Rokeya Khanam of Shoronkhola Police Station said officers responded after receiving information from local residents and recovered the two bodies from the house. Following the completion of the inquest, both bodies were sent to the Bagerhat District Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
She added that the exact cause of death would only be established after forensic findings and the completion of the police investigation. Investigators are also interviewing family members, neighbours and other relevant individuals to reconstruct the events leading up to the deaths.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence gathered. Until the inquiry is complete, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation about the circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths.
