Deadly Violence in Sylhet

A disturbing wave of violent incidents in Bangladesh’s Sylhet region has left two people dead and several others injured, including a brutal attempted abduction in which a grandmother was killed while defending her family, and a separate teenage altercation that turned fatal over a trivial dispute.

In the first incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday in Gowainghat Upazila, a group of unidentified assailants reportedly broke into a family home with the intention of abducting a teenage girl. According to police and local accounts, the attackers forced entry by breaking down the door while the household was asleep at around 3:30am.

The girl’s grandmother, 54-year-old Dilara Begum, was fatally stabbed when she intervened to protect her granddaughter. The teenager’s mother also sustained injuries during the attack, while the girl herself was physically assaulted. Following the incident, the assailants fled the scene. The injured mother and daughter are currently receiving treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Local representatives noted that the family’s son has been working abroad in Oman for several years, leaving the household largely vulnerable. Community members also indicated a possible financial dispute involving overseas workers, which police are currently investigating as a potential motive.

In a separate incident later the same day, violence erupted in Beanibazar Upazila when two teenage friends became involved in a fatal confrontation. The pair had spent the afternoon collecting mangoes and were reportedly eating them together when a disagreement escalated into a heated argument.

The situation quickly turned violent, with one teenager allegedly using a knife to attack the other. The victim died at the scene. Authorities have since launched a search for the accused minor, while the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Police officials from both upazilas have confirmed that investigations are ongoing into both cases, with arrests yet to be made in the Gowainghat home invasion and the Beanibazar stabbing.
