In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread panic, criminals held a sharp knife to a four-year-old child’s throat to snatch a gold necklace from her mother in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. The brazen daylight robbery has left local residents deeply concerned about community safety.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon near the nutrition office adjacent to the Pirganj Fire Station in Mokimpur village.
According to the police complaint, Mosammat Shamima Akhter, an assistant teacher at the Mokimpur Number 2 Government Primary School, was heading home by an auto-rickshaw alongside her colleagues after finishing her daily duties. As their vehicle reached the area near the fire station around 3:45 PM, two unidentified men riding a motorcycle intercepted their path abruptly.
Before the occupants could comprehend the situation, the assailants sprang a sudden attack. One of them drew a sharp weapon and held it directly against the throat of four-year-old Tiyasha Jannat, who was seated in her mother’s lap. Shouting threats, the criminals demanded valuables, warning that the child would be harmed if they resisted. Paralyzed by fear and witnessing the weapon pressed against the toddler’s throat, the teacher and her colleagues began screaming for help in sheer desperation.
Capitalising on the absolute panic of the victims, the miscreants forcefully snatched a gold necklace weighing approximately one bori and one ana from Shamima Akhter’s neck. Local market estimates place the value of the stolen jewellery at around 250,000 taka. Immediately after seizing the ornament, the culprits sped away on their motorcycle, vanishing before locals could intervene.
Following the traumatic ordeal, the victim, alongside three of her colleagues, reported to the Pirganj Police Station and filed a formal written complaint against the two unidentified suspects.
Confirming the case, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Najmul Haque of Pirganj Police Station stated that law enforcement authorities have already initiated an investigation. Police are actively working to track down the culprits and ensure swift legal action follows.
