Police have recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified man from a paddy field in a haor wetland area of Mohanগঞ্জ upazila in Netrokona district, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The discovery was made in the Dhali Haor area under Barantar locality, a remote and sparsely populated wetland region known for seasonal rice cultivation. According to local accounts, farmers working in the fields came across the body on Monday evening after finishing their harvesting activities near a sluice gate adjacent to the haor. Alarmed by the sight, they immediately informed local representatives, who in turn notified the police.
Officers from Mohanগঞ্জ Police Station later arrived at the scene and recovered the remains during the night. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the body could not be identified on site, and fingerprint collection was not possible. The remains were subsequently transported to Netrokona Modern District Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination the following morning.
Local representatives estimated that the deceased was a man aged around 40 years. However, authorities stressed that this remains a preliminary assessment pending forensic confirmation. The remoteness of the area, combined with low population density, is believed to have delayed earlier detection of the body.
The Officer-in-Charge of Mohanগঞ্জ Police Station stated that the location of the incident, approximately 27 kilometres from the police station, contributed to a delay in recovery operations. He added that initial observations suggest the body had been lying at the site for a considerable period. While the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, police suspect that it may be linked to a homicide, after which the body was allegedly left in the field.
Investigators are now working to establish the identity of the deceased. Efforts include cross-checking reports of missing persons from surrounding areas and reviewing any relevant local information. Police have also indicated that further action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report, which is expected to provide crucial insight into the cause and time of death.
The incident has caused considerable concern among local residents, many of whom have called for a thorough investigation and swift identification of the victim. Authorities have assured that the case is being treated with priority and that all possible leads are being pursued.
