Hospitals across Bangladesh have admitted 756 new dengue patients within a single 24-hour period, according to official health data, reflecting a continuing rise in mosquito-borne viral infections nationwide.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported no new fatalities in its daily epidemiological bulletin released on Tuesday, 11 August. However, the latest admissions push the cumulative number of hospitalised dengue cases recorded across the country this year to 20,827, while the total death toll since January stands at 61.

Urban centres continue to bear a heavy burden of infection, though rural and semi-urban districts are reporting substantial caseloads as vector populations expand beyond the capital during the ongoing monsoon season.

Regional Breakdown of Patient Admissions

The daily health bulletin highlights widespread transmission across nearly all administrative divisions. Healthcare facilities within the Dhaka division, excluding the two metropolitan city corporations, admitted the highest number of patients over the past 24 hours, closely followed by municipal institutions within the capital itself.

Outside the central region, Khulna, Chattogram, and Barishal divisions reported significant patient intakes, placing additional strain on local healthcare infrastructure.

Historical Context and Infection Trajectory

The Directorate General of Health Services has formally maintained systematic records on dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000. Over the past quarter-century, the viral disease—transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes—has evolved from a localized urban threat into a major public health challenge affecting districts nationwide.

The current figures follow several years of heightened dengue activity across the region. Bangladesh experienced its worst recorded outbreak in 2023, when a record 321,179 patients required hospital care and 1,705 people succumbed to severe dengue complications. That unprecedented wave overwhelmed tertiary care facilities and prompted extensive vector-control drives across major municipalities.

In the preceding year, health authorities logged approximately 102,000 hospital admissions alongside more than 400 deaths, indicating sustained year-round transmission rather than isolated seasonal spikes.

Public health experts emphasize that stagnant rainwater accumulation during monsoon showers creates ideal breeding sites for vector larvae in urban construction zones, discarded containers, and residential drainage systems. Health officials continue to urge citizens to eliminate standing water around households, employ mosquito nets, and seek early medical evaluation at municipal clinics upon experiencing high fever, joint pain, or severe headaches.
