A teenage girl with a disability was allegedly raped after visiting her maternal grandfather’s home in Gafargaon, Mymensingh. Her maternal grandfather filed a case with Pagla Police Station on Monday night, 28 September, following the alleged incident earlier that afternoon.
The incident reportedly took place in the Uttar Harina area of Panchbagh Union in Gafargaon. According to the case statement and information from local sources, the girl had travelled from her home in Sahedal village of Hossainpur upazila in Kishoreganj to visit her maternal grandfather’s family.
At around 5.30pm on Monday, the girl reportedly went behind her grandfather’s house to collect fallen leaves. Police and the complainant allege that at that time, Sabbir, the son of a local resident identified as Rafiqul, also known as Long Rafique, approached her and persuaded her to go to an abandoned house near the residence.
The case alleges that the girl was sexually assaulted inside the abandoned building. Details of what happened immediately afterwards have not been disclosed by police.
The alleged incident was later reported to the family, following which the girl’s maternal grandfather went to the police station and filed a case. The police have begun investigating the allegations and are attempting to locate and arrest the accused.
Mohammad Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Pagla Police Station, said the girl had been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a medical examination. He also confirmed that efforts were under way to arrest the accused.
The medical examination is expected to form part of the investigation, along with statements from the complainant, the girl and other relevant individuals. Investigators may also examine the reported location of the incident and collect other available evidence to establish the sequence of events.
As the allegation involves a minor, protecting the girl’s identity and personal information is particularly important. Her disability also makes appropriate support and protection during the investigation a significant consideration. The authorities are expected to handle the case through the relevant legal procedures while ensuring that the victim is not exposed to further distress.
The allegation has not yet been tested in court, and the accused remains entitled to due legal process. The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the evidence gathered by police.
