El Fath Appointed for Argentina-England Semi-Final

Moroccan-born American referee Ismail Elfath has been appointed to officiate the first semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina will face England at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday (15 July). The high-profile fixture, scheduled to kick off at 1:00 a.m., will place one of football’s most experienced officials under intense global scrutiny as two of the sport’s traditional heavyweights compete for a place in the final.

At 44, Elfath brings considerable international experience to the occasion. He has already overseen three matches during the current World Cup and has earned a reputation for calm authority. At the same time, several of his decisions in this tournament have generated debate, making his appointment one of the talking points ahead of the semi-final.

Elfath is no stranger to Argentina. He served as the fourth official during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar, giving him previous experience of working at the highest level of international football. His familiarity with several Argentine players, particularly those now competing in Major League Soccer or previous FIFA competitions, adds another layer of interest to his latest assignment.

During the 2026 World Cup, Elfath has officiated the Netherlands-Japan, Spain-Uruguay and Brazil-Norway matches. Across those three fixtures, he has shown eight yellow cards and one red card. The dismissal was issued to Uruguay’s Agustín Canobbio following a dangerous challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, a decision that proved significant in Uruguay’s eventual elimination from the tournament.

His performance in the Spain-Uruguay match attracted the strongest criticism. Spanish media argued that he failed to establish control early enough, allowing the contest to become overly physical. One of the most controversial incidents involved Rodrigo Bentancur’s heavy challenge on Iñaki Williams. Although the tackle resulted in Williams sustaining an injury that ruled him out of several matches, Elfath opted to issue only a yellow card, prompting widespread debate over whether a harsher punishment should have been given.

Another controversial moment came during Brazil’s meeting with Norway. Elfath initially waved play on after Norway’s Kristoffer Ajer challenged Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area. Following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he overturned his original decision and awarded Brazil a penalty. Bruno Guimarães failed to convert the resulting spot-kick. Brazil later received another penalty, from which Neymar scored, but the goal was not enough to prevent defeat. The match ended amid heightened tensions between the players, adding further attention to the referee’s performance.

Elfath’s journey into elite officiating has been anything but conventional. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he moved to the United States at the age of 18 to study mechanical engineering at the University of Texas in Austin. Although he initially pursued football as a player, he later chose refereeing as his professional path. He became a United States citizen in 2001 through the Diversity Visa programme and steadily rose through the ranks of American football officiating.

Since joining FIFA’s international referees list in 2016, Elfath has become a familiar figure in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he has handled numerous high-profile fixtures. His MLS experience has also brought him into regular contact with Lionel Messi following the Argentine captain’s move to Inter Miami. Elfath officiated the 2023 Leagues Cup final between Inter Miami and Nashville, a match in which Messi’s side secured the trophy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Beyond the World Cup, Elfath has officiated at several major international tournaments, including the Copa América, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Olympic Games, the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, he took charge of one of Argentina’s group-stage matches, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The result contributed to Argentina’s early elimination, with current internationals Facundo Medina and Alexis Mac Allister both featuring in the starting line-up.

This marks Elfath’s second World Cup. During the 2022 tournament in Qatar, he officiated Portugal versus Ghana, Cameroon versus Brazil and the Round of 16 meeting between Japan and Croatia. Those appointments reinforced his standing among FIFA’s most trusted referees for high-pressure international matches.

For the Argentina-England semi-final, Elfath will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, while Italy’s Maurizio Mariani will serve as the fourth official. With a place in the World Cup final at stake, every major decision will inevitably come under close examination, placing the experienced referee and his officiating team firmly in the spotlight alongside the players themselves.
