A 70-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer and robbed of a gold chain after a person wearing a burqa entered her flat in the guise of a beggar in North Sewta area of Manikganj municipality.
The incident took place at around 11:30am on Thursday (24 September) at a flat on the second floor of Baitul Aman Bhaban. The injured woman, identified as Hajera Begum, is receiving treatment at the 250-bed Manikganj General Hospital.
According to local residents and the victim’s family, Hajera was alone at home when the incident occurred. At around 11:30am, a person wearing a burqa reportedly knocked on the door and asked for alms. Believing the visitor to be a beggar, Hajera brought some rice in a polythene bag and approached the door.
The person allegedly attacked her with a hammer as she came towards the entrance. Hajera sustained serious injuries to her head and fell to the floor. The attacker then reportedly removed a gold chain weighing around one and a half bhori from her neck and fled the flat.
Hajera’s daughter, Aleya Begum, said the attacker had arrived at the building gate wearing a burqa and knocked on the door. After her mother opened it, the person suddenly struck her repeatedly with the hammer before taking the gold chain and escaping.
Aleya said the attacker was carrying a polythene bag containing a small quantity of rice, apparently as part of the disguise used to gain access to the flat.
Hajera’s cries alerted people living in nearby flats. Neighbours rushed to the scene and found her lying injured on the floor. After receiving the news, family members quickly arrived and took her to the Manikganj General Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.
The incident has raised concerns over the use of deceptive identities to gain access to homes, particularly when residents are alone. In this case, the alleged attacker reportedly used a request for alms to approach the victim directly at her door before carrying out the assault.
Police went to the scene after being informed of the incident and began examining available evidence. CCTV footage from the building and surrounding area is being reviewed as investigators attempt to identify the person involved. The footage may help establish the suspect’s movements before and after the attack.
Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monir Hossain said an investigation was under way into the incident in which a woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer and had her gold chain snatched after the assailant entered her flat.
He said legal proceedings were in progress.
Investigators are expected to examine the CCTV footage and other available evidence as they work to establish the identity of the alleged attacker. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including how the person entered the building and left the area, will also be relevant to the investigation.
For now, the victim remains under medical care while police continue their inquiry into the reported assault and robbery.
